EN - "Accepting The Image" is a film set in New York City and discusses the representation of woman and their identification trough media in relation to the City itself. It's constructed around observational imagery of women shot throughout the city of New York and sequences of glamourous hollywood stars such as, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow, and the Olson Twins. By combining the world of glamour and everyday scenes form the city, the film actively questions the role of glamour and the media portraying it.
The film portrays the way New York City women, their dreams and their lifestyles are represented in the media and in reality. The film questions this dual relationship between both worlds by sketching the portraits of Alynn, Lindsey and Holly, three young women who recently moved to the city.
Filled with certain dreams and expectations, they each tell us what New York means to them and what their motivations were to go live there. As it appears, their incentives seem to blend with the image of the city as it is depicted in their favourite movies and television series. Some of the girls try to live up to the fiction, while others have already been confronted with a somewhat different reality.
An observing camera sketches a feminine image of the streets of New York. The girls' story provides a direct comment to this and offers a critical perspective on the way young women in general identify with this and their idols representing it. “Accepting The Image” questions the adoration of certain media and its consequences.

De Cock on show at M Museum
Leuven’s M Museum is displaying two works by Flemish video artist Karel De Cock – Accepting the Image and Resonance – which form part of the Open M Exhibition which runs until 20 August.
Accepting the Image and Resonance both show the director’s fascination for the metropolis and western values. While Resonance is set in Brussels, Accepting the Image takes us to the mother of all great cities: New York. Women play a central role in this picture and more precisely their representation and identification through the media.
Three Flemish docs at Visions du Réel
The international documentary festival Visions du Réel in Nyon, Switzerland, will host three Flemish documentary premieres: Manno Lanssens’ Epilogue, Karel De Cock’s Accepting the Image and Mike Figgis’ The Co(te)lette Film. The festival, which is also affiliated to the Doc Outlook Documentary market, runs from 7-13 April. This year's is the first edition under the artistic leadership of Luciano Barisone.
A former journalist, the Italian Barisone has proven his worth at a number of international film festivals including Venice, Locarno and Firenze.
