Flemish producer joins Rotterdam Lab
Flemish producer Jules Debrock will be joining 77 young film producers for the 12th edition of Rotterdam Lab, a CineMart event for emerging producers. The event takes place during the International Film Festival Rotterdam from 28 January till 1 February.
Jules Debrock’s production company Pain Perdu proved their talent with their work on Moon Blaisse’s graduation film Sometime Later which won at Geneva’s Cinéma Tous Ecrans Festival last year. The film also earned the director a VAF Wildcard, an award aimed at giving recently graduated filmmaking talent a chance to embark on a first professional project.
The Invader and Sometime Later win in Geneva
Both Nicolas Provost's feature debut The Invader and Moon Blaisse's graduation short Sometime Later got awarded at this year's 17th Cinéma Tous Ecrans festival (4-11 November) in Geneva. Nicolas Provost won Reflet d'Or for Best Director, while Moon Blaisse received the Reflet d'Or for Best International Short.
The Invader is the story of an illegal African immigrant whose journey begins in Brussels as he searches, like many other immigrants, for a better life. Through his confrontation with a harsh society, he slowly but irreversibly starts to embody our worst fears and becomes the monster we have created. The film features talent such as Italian actress Stefania Rocca (The Talented Mr Ripley) and Issaka Sawadogo (Hotel Swooni).
Cinéma Tous Ecrans selects
Nicolas Provost’s feature debut The Invader has been selected for this year's Cinéma Tous Ecrans Festival (4-10 November). Also screening at the fest are two shorts from Flanders: Gilles Coulier's new Paroles and VAF Wildcard winner Moon Blaisse's short Sometime Later. The 17-year-old Swiss fest has a tradition of selecting films that break through ‘audiovisual barriers'.
In 2010, director Gilles Coulier was selected for Cannes’ Cinéfondation with his previous short, Iceland, which was only his third-year project at the Sint-Lukas Film Academy. His graduation project, Paroles, is now starting its international career at Cinéma Tous Ecrans. The director describes his new short cryptically as ‘Nightly encounters imply a return, a return that should make a departure easier.’
Sometime Later awarded in Mexico
Moon Blaisse's Sometime Later has won two awards at Mexico’s Guanajuato International Film Festival (22-31 July). The short grabbed both the Signis Award for Best International Short Fiction and the WIF Award for Best Short Fiction by a Female Director.
The jury for the WIF Award praised the film as 'a fascinating exploration of human characters', noting that the 'film was selected for its unique direction by a woman: Moon Blaisse. We look forward to seeing her future works.' The Short Fiction jury lauded the creative language of the film and how it calls attention to 'the risks of globalisation that we are living and the urgency of recognising our responsible connections’.
