EN - Following up on his meticulous dissection of the Apple laptop in Dear Steve, Herman Asselberghs now turns his attention to another global popular consumer product: Avatar, the most expensive and highest-grossing film ever. By way of an elaborated interior monologue taking on the form of a film studies class, Speech Act covers a complex of themes well beyond cinema concerns. As the acme of mainstream culture, James Cameron's sci-fi epic turns out to provide ample fodder for a critique of triumphant transparency, impressively delivered by the established Brussels actor Willy Thomas.

Skunk’s international tour continues
Jan and Raf Roosens’s short Skunk has been selected for the 59th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen in Germany (2-7 May). Other Flemish shorts in the Oberhausen line-up are Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s award-winning animated short Oh Willy… and Herman Asselberghs’ Speech Act.
The Roosens brothers quickly made a name for themselves in the advertising world as directors. Skunk is their first short film for Antwerp-based production company Rococo. Producer was Caroline van Ranst.
Abu Dhabi and Montréal invite Rivers Return
Joe Vanhoutteghem’s short film Rivers Return has been confirmed for the line-up of both the Abu Dhabi International Film Festival (11-20 October) and the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma in Montreal (10-21 October). Since its international premiere at Locarno, Rivers Return has generated quite a lot of interest abroad.
The Festival du Nouveau Cinéma also selected Sofie Benoot’s Blue Meridian (Panorama International), Herman Asselberghs’s Speech Act (FNC Lab) and minority co-production Our Children by Joachim Lafosse (Special Presentation). At Abu Dhabi, Rivers Return (pictured left) is accompanied in the festival line-up by minority co-production Pinocchio by Enzo d’Alo, which screens in the Showcase section.
