Teodora Ana Mihai’s documentary Waiting for August and Frederik Jan Depickere’s short film Adrift are selected for this year’s Canadian International Documentary Film Festival, aka Hot Docs (24 April – 4 May). Three more films co-produced with Flanders,Before The Last Curtain Falls, Ne me quitte pas and See No Evil, made the bill in Toronto.
Waiting for August portrays the gripping story of 15-year-old Georgiana, the eldest daughter of the Halmac family. She lives with her six siblings in a social housing condo on the outskirts of Bacau, Romania. As their mother, who works as an economic migrant in Italy, won’t be back until summer, Georgiana is involuntarily catapulted to the role of new head of the family.
Shorts by six Flemish filmmakers have been invited to interfilm, the International Short Film Festival in Berlin. Among the selectees is Sahim Omar Kalifa’s festival favourite Baghdad Messi. Not only one of the longest running German short film festivals after Oberhausen, interfilm Berlin is also a prime European short film festival and runs from 12 till 17 November.
Several shorts from Flanders are set to screen at the Hamburg International Short Film Festival (4-10 June) this week. Jeff Otte’sFucking Suburbia, ADRIFT by Frederik Jan Depickere and Nicolas Provost’s Tokyo Giants are selected for international competition. Anouk De Clercq’s experimental short Swan Song enters the No Budget competition. Also screening at the German fest are Perfect Drug, Rosa, Anna’s Lil’ Sis, Mumbler and Stardust.
Receiving its world premiere in Hamburg is Jeff Otte’s short film Fucking Suburbia, starring Valentijn Dhaenens (The Misfortunates).
