synopsis

A poignant family portrait centered on a teenager growing up in rural Bavaria, considered the economic powerhouse of Germany. The 13-year-old lives on an old farm with his eccentric grandmother, surrounded by her colony of cats. His father is a regular visitor to the farm, committed to raising his son and sharing his worldview with him.On their doorstep passes a freeway that connects this region to Eastern Europe and beyond. The film touches on the boy's coming-of-age and his gradual involvement with political rhetoric. As the memories of the past that shaped contemporary Europe fade, his adolescent world is increasingly visited by the spectres of German history. The film is not only concerned with the interlacing of past and present, but also with the connection between personal and political time. It gradually uncovers how history haunts our daily lives, makes itself felt in words and gestures, even in the act of retreating into one's own universe, one's own mythology... How history finds ways to ventriloquize our existence and our relationship with the outside world.
De Duits-Filipijnse filmmaker Ina Luchsperger construeert een scherp en beklijvend familieportret met als centraal figuur een tiener die opgroeit in het rurale Beieren, de regio die vaak wordt aangeduid als de economische motor van Duitsland. Deze 13-jarige jongen leeft op een oude boerderij, samen met zijn grootmoeder en omringd door haar vele katten. Zijn vader komt regelmatig op bezoek en is bijzonder toegewijd aan de opvoeding van zijn zoon en het delen van zijn wereldbeeld.
Vlakbij het huis ligt een snelweg die de regio verbindt met Oost-Europa en verder. De film observeert voorzichtig het opgroeien van de jongen en zijn gestage betovering door politieke retoriek. Als de herinneringen aan het verleden vervagen, wordt zijn adolescente leven steeds vaker bezocht door de geesten van de Duitse geschiedenis. De film beweegt zich doorheen de vervlechting van heden en verleden en de connectie tussen het persoonlijke en het politieke. Hoe de geschiedenis geleidelijk binnendringt in onze dagelijkse levens en zich laat voelen in woorden en gebaren, zelfs als men ervoor kiest zich terug te trekken in een eigen universum, een eigen mythologie.
