synopsis

Martin Uit den Bogaard (67) is one of the world's top 10 bio-artists. He's a simple man with a far from simple plan. His quest is to get his hands on a new human body part to use in his work, while he wrestles to obtain the rights to his own body for his ultimate and final piece which will come only after his death. It is his personal struggle, since our bodies become state property when we die. Uit den Bogaard illustrates through his work, not that there is life after death, but rather that there is life in death.
Martin Uit den Bogaard, un artiste belgo-hollandais de 67 ans, cherche des parties de corps humain pour les utiliser dans ses oeuvres. Mais ce n’est pas tout: il lutte pour obtenir les droits d’utiliser les dernières parties de son propre corps, après sa mort. Il s’agit d’un combat personnel, étant donné que notre corps devient la propriété de l’Etat lorsque nous mourons. A travers ses oeuvres, Uit den Bogaard illustre non pas qu’il y a une vie après la mort, mais bien qu’il y a une vie pendant la mort.
De Nederlandse Belg Martin Uit den Bogaard (67 jaar) is een van ’s werelds top 10 bio-kunstenaars. Het is een eenvoudige man met een allerminst eenvoudig plan. Martin gaat op zoek naar een nieuw menselijk lichaamsdeel, terwijl hij strijd levert om de rechten op zijn eigen lichaam te bemachtigen, om uiteindelijk op te dagen in zijn laatste, ultieme werk, na zijn dood. Het is zijn persoonlijke strijd, gezien ons lichaam eigendom wordt van de staat wanneer wij sterven.
Martin Uit den Bogaard illustreert met zijn werk niet zozeer dat er leven is na de dood - maar eerder dat er leven is in de dood. Veilig ingekapseld in glazen schrijnen, genereren dieren, planten, en zelfs mensenweefsel energie die de kunstenaar met behulp van elektroden, voltmeters en computerapparatuur, omzet in beelden en geluiden. De fysiologische minerale processen suggereren dat niets eindigt en zijn afhankelijk van tijd, beweging, temperatuur, vochtigheid en licht. Door het isoleren van het weefsel van lucht en bacteriën vertraagt Martin het ontbindingsproces en stelt hij het onvermijdelijke verval uit. Voor Martin is alles materie. Alle materie is voortdurend in beweging. Maar wat gebeurt er met de immateriële zaken zoals onze ziel en ons bewustzijn?
