EN - Seventeen-year-old Jasper lives in a small grey town in a family dominated by his dad, a singer called Lukkie Luk. Jasper finds it hard to come to terms with his father’s career and also struggles with the problems of adolescence.

NL - De 17-jarige Jasper groeit op in een braaf, grijs Vlaams dorp. In zijn eigen gezin kan hij niet echt zijn wie hij werkelijk is. Jaspers papa is charmezanger, genaamd Lukkie Luk, die er alles aan doet om een grote ster te worden. Alle aandacht binnen het gezin gaat daardoor naar zijn carrière en zo wordt er over niet veel anders gepraat. Jasper zoekt een manier om hiermee om te gaan en wordt geconfronteerd met de typische levensvragen van een adolescent. Vragen waarmee Jasper niet meteen thuis terecht kan.

Des questions auxquelles il ne trouvera pas de réponse tant qu’il restera dans sa routine.

Flemish five win in Brussels

Five Flemish shorts were awarded at the 16th edition of the Brussels Short Film Festival (24 April - 4May). Besides the National and International Competition, the festival added a third section this year, titled ‘Next Generation.’ This competition focused exclusively on (inter)national student short films.

hlIn the Next Generation competition, Lukas Dhondt’s Headlong (pictured on the left) grabbed the Grand Prix, worth €1,500, while Anthony Schatteman’s Kiss Me Softly was awarded the Prix National du Public.

Flanders shorts overflow Newport Beach

From April 25 till May 2 three animated as well as three narrative shorts from Flanders are screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California. Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s Oh Willy…, Little Ryan by Aad Verstraelen and Hisko Hulsing’sJunkyard, a co-production with Flanders, are in the running for Best Animated Short. The live action short films Dura Lex by Anke Blondé, Death of a Shadow by Tom Van Avermaet and Anthony Schatteman’s Kiss Me Softly were also added to the fest’s official line-up.

Aad Verstraelen's Little RyanScreening in the animation category is Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s much appraised stop motion short Oh Willy… Fifty-something Willy returns to the naturist community where he grew up to visit his dying mother. After her death he flees into the forest in confused sadness where he finds the motherly protection of a big gentle hairy beast.

Flemish Award winners at Leuven short Fest

Benoit De Clerck’s The Importance of Sweet and Salt, Tom Van Avermaet’s Oscar nominated Death of a Shadow, Wouter Bouvijn’sCrossroads and Roman Klochkov’s Natasha were the winners in the Flemish competition at the 18th Leuven International Short Film festival (1 – 8 December). The Humo Award, a guest competition, went to Kiss Me Softly by Anthony Schatteman (pictured on the left).

The Award, which comes with a cash prize of € 2,000, also ensures the short a spot on the 2014 Academy Awards longlist. Meanwhile Wouter Bouvijn’s short Crossroads received the Award for Best Debut.
