The Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF) announced its June list of feature projects that are to receive funding. Misfortunates director Felix van Groeningen’s new project, The Broken Circle Breakdown..., which had received script money in a previous round is now confirmed for development funding. New features from directors Frank Van Passel (The Emperor of Taste, Manneken Pis), Nic Balthazar (Ben X), Dimitri Karakatsanis (Small Gods), and writer Carl Joos (Dossier K., The Alzheimer Case) are just a few of the other top-line projects which received support in this round of funding.

Van Groeningen received funding to start development on his new project, titled The Broken Circle Breakdown featuring the Cover-ups of Alabama, written by The Alzheimer Case’s Carl Joos. Joos also wrote the script for The Treatment, which received production support and is to be directed by Indra Siera (Old Belgium). Frank Van Passel is teaming up with local comedian Urbanus to start filming Altijd Tevreeden (Always Happy) and Nic Balthazar is to start work on his project, Team Mario.

Production company Minds Meet, which has recently been making headlines with the selection of its Little Baby Jesus of Flandr in Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes, is to develop a feature project by director Bas Devos, Just in Time for Something. Dimitri Karakatsanis, known for Venice Critics’ Week entry Small Gods, received screenplay support for his new project, The Teacher. Script money also went to Raf Reyntjens’ Paradise Trips, Jan Van Dyck’s Four Summers and Winter by John Shank.

In total, nine projects were given support this round, demonstrating the diverse range of Flemish cinema that VAF supports.
