Montreal-based world sales outfit Attraction Distribution is presenting prestigious 10-part World War I miniseries In Flanders Fieldsat this year's Mipcom (7-10 October). Helmed by award-winning Jan Matthys (Quiz Me Quick), the series is scripted by Charles de Weerdt, Carl Joos (The Memory of a Killer) and Geert Vermeulen (Cataract), and stars Barbara Sarafian (Moscow, Belgium), Lize Feryn, Wim Opbrouck, Matthieu Sys and Wietse Tanghe.
In Flanders Fields focuses on five members of Ghent's Boesman family, each of whom is going through their own war during four years. The central character is 15-year-old Marie, who dreams of becoming a doctor, but becomes a nurse at the front line, where she eventually finds the strength to build up a balanced perspective on the world and her family.
The story starts at the end of July 2014. The family has gathered for a night of culture at the Boesman residence. The host is Philippe, a happy-go-lucky gynaecologist who is fully convinced that there will not be a war. Besides his assertive daughter Marie, there's also his reserved wife, Virginie, and his eldest son Vincent, a passionate idealist who is combining military service with his law studies in Leuven and who has just been drafted. Vincent is pushing his brother Guillaume to report for duty as a volunteer. When Guillaume, who is quite a lively boy, refuses, Vincent calls him a coward in public.
Director of photography is Stijn Van der Veken, with Joris Brouwers as editor. Script editor is Ed Vanderweyden. Kristin Van Passel signed for the costumes, while Bart Van Loo is responsible for the art direction. Jef Neve composed the original score.
In Flanders Fields is a 10 x 50-minute series produced by Dirk Impens for Menuet (The Broken Circle Breakdown) in association with VRT's één channel, which is to premiere the series on 12 January 2014, and supported by the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Media Fund of Flemish Media Minsiter Ingrid Lieten.
