Bas Devos’ feature debut Violet is to have its world premiere at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. Depicting a teenager’s growing loneliness after the brutal loss of his best friend, Violet is selected for official competition in the Generation 14plus programme. Three co-productions with Flanders also join the Generation line-up: Tamar van den Dop’s Supernova, Above Us All by Eugenie Jansen and Finn by Frans Weisz.
Bas Devos delivers his first feature project with Violet, a film about a group of BMX riders who are confronted with the unexpected and brutal loss of one of their peers. They turn to 15-year-old Jesse, the only witness to the death of their friend, for answers he cannot give them. The boy threatens to drown in his own grief and a rising feeling of loneliness. Violet is a visual portrait of a teenager’s mourning process.
The main roles are played by newcomer César De Schutter, Raf Walschaerts and Mira Helmer. Photography on Violet was done by Nicolas Karakatsanis (Bullhead, The Loft, Animal Rescue), Dieter Diependaele (82 Days in April, Death of a Shadow, Grande Hotel) came on board as editor. Tomas Leyers of production hub Minds Meet (I’m the same I’m an other, Blue Bird) produced the feature.
Leyers also coproduced Eugenie Jansen’s Above Us All, selected out of competition for the Generation 14plus section. It deals with an Australian girl that is taken back to Belgium by her father after her mother has died. The main cast is formed by Shayleah Sands, Gaëtano Debyser, Maarten Baes and Frida Neels.
Tamar van den Dop’s Supernova about a 15-year-old dulled girl who starts exploring her blooming sexuality also received an invitation from Berlin. Eurydice Gysel of Brussels-based Epidemic coproduced the film for Flanders. Gaite Jansen, Bob Schwarze and director Tamar van den Dop take the main roles.
Finally, there’s also Finn by director Frans Weisz. Selected for the Generation K+ programme, the film portrays nine-year-old Finn who loves to make music but whose father prefers to see him play football just like the rest of the boys. Flemish acting icon Jan Decleir stars alongside Daan Schuurmans, Hanna Verboom and Meis Van der Hoeven. Peter Bouckaert entered the project as Flemish co-producer.
Violet, Above Us All, Supernova and Finn all received support through the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Film Fund of Flemish Cultural Affairs Minister Joke Schauvliege.
