Four Flemish features have been selected for competition at the 29th Festroia International Film Festival in Portugal (7-16 June). Brasserie RomantiqueThe Broken Circle BreakdownOffline and Time of My Life are all in the running to take home some prizes. This year, the festival has also organised a focus on Belgium and pays homage to Flemish actor Jan Decleir.

Madly in LoveBoth Joel Vanhoebrouck’s Brasserie Romantique and Felix van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown screen as part of the fest’s official competition. Peter Monsaert’s directorial debut Offlineis selected for the competitive First Works section, while Nic Baltazar is competing in the Man and His Environment category with Time of My Life.

In addition to the official selection, the festival has also organised a tribute to Belgian filmmaking, showcasing pictures such as Erik Van Looy’s Loft, Felix van Groeningen’s The Misfortunates and Hans Van Nuffel’s feature debut Oxygen. More recent box office hits Michaël R Roskam’s Bullhead and Geoffrey Enthoven’s Come As You Are are also included in the showcase. Furthermore, the programme also includes a number of French-speaking Belgian films co-produced with Flanders, including Nicolas Provost’s The Invader and Illegal by Olivier Masset-Depasse (prod: Versus Production/Prime Time) and The World Belongs To Us by Stephan Streker (prod: MG Productions/Minds Meet).

This year, special attention also goes to Flemish actor Jan Decleir with the screening of Stijn Coninx’ Daens, A Chicken is No Dog and The Memory of a Killer. Hilde Van Mieghem’s Madly in Love, in the fest’s Love Films section, also features Decleir as part of the central cast.

Besides feature films from Flanders, a number of shorts are also selected for Festroia, including Jan and Raf Roosens’ Skunk, Dura Lex by Anke Blondé, and Dancing with Travolta, a short by Lenny Van Wesemael. Finally, Tom Van Avermaet’s Oscar-nominated short film Death of a Shadow is set for a Portuguese screening as well.

Brasserie Romantique was produced by A Private View (Oxygen) and scripted by Jean-Claude Van Rijckeghem. Felix van Groeningen and Carl Joos wrote the screenplay for The Broken Circle Breakdown, produced by Menuet (The Misfortunates). Offline, a Lunanime production, was written by Peter Monsaert, Dominique Willaert and Tom Dupont. Nic Balthazar scripted Time of My Life, a production for Eyeworks. Savage Film produced Bullhead, Come As You Are was realised by Fobic Films, while Woestijnvis produced Loft. All films, except for Daens, were made possible with the support of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Film Fund of Flemish Cultural Affairs Minister Joke Schauvliege.
