Gerrit Messiaen’s documentary film Lucien Hervé, photographer despite himself has picked up its second award at the Istanbul International Architecture and Urban Films Festival. Last week, the documentary about the French photographer won Best International Film at the Arquiteturas Film Festival in Lisbon, Portugal.
Lucien Hervé, photographer despite himself is a film about the essence of the work and life of one of the most important photographers of architecture of the 20th century. As the official photographer of French architect Le Corbusier, Lucien Hervé worked for the designer from 1949 until his death in 1965. He then worked for a number of famous architects including Marcel Breuer, Oscar Niemeyer and Walter Gropius.
The film started its international career at the Doku.Arts Festival in Berlin and screened in various Portuguese cities following its selection at the Arquiteturas Film Festival in Lisbon, where it was awarded the prize for Best International Film. Lucien Hervé, photographer despite himself recently also won second prize at the Istanbul International Architecture and Urban Films Festival. It is set to screen at the Architecture Festival of Rotterdam and the Films sur l’art event as well as the Millenium International Documentary Film Festival in Brussels. Lucien Hervé, photographer despite himself has also been selected for the Doku.Arts edition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Lucien Hervé, photographer despite himself was scripted, directed and produced by Gerrit Messiaen for Atom Film. Maarten Ameloot, Igor De Baecke and Gerrit Messiaen did principal photography; Joren Desmidt signed for editing. Ward De Vleeschhouwer composed the original score for the film.
