Actors Matthias Schoenaerts (Bullhead, Rust and Bone, The Drop) and Stef Aerts (Oxygen, Madly in Love) are set to star in Belgica, Felix van Groeningen’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated The Broken Circle Breakdown.
The drama follows two brothers who start a bar and get swept up in its success in the midst of Belgium’s nightlife scene. Van Groeningen completed the script of Belgica together with Arne Sierens, who also co-wrote With Friends Like These. The director will also reteam with collaborators involved in The Broken Circle Breakdown, including producer Dirk Impens, DoP Ruben Impens and editor Nico Leunen. Principal photography on Belgica is scheduled to start in the fall.
‘I’m excited to be working with such talented actors,’ said van Groeningen. ‘With The Broken Circle Breakdown in the running for an Oscar and the prospect of shooting Belgica, this is a very exciting year.’
Belgica is van Groeningen’s fifth feature film. His output includes Steve + Sky, With Friends Like These, The Misfortunates and The Broken Circle Breakdown, the latter being nominated for the Foreign Language Oscar this year.
Van Groeningen is repped by CAA, as is Schoenaerts, and Management 360. The Match Factory, the Cologne-based sales agent that also sold The Broken Circle Breakdown around the globe, will handle world sales for Belgica. The film is a production of Menuet (In Flanders Fields, The Misfortunates), in co-production with Topkapi from the Netherlands and Pyramide Productions in France. The film was able to count on the support of the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Film Fund of Flemish Cultural Affairs Minister Joke Schauvliege.
