In addition to the wholly Flemish films on view this year, the Toronto International Film Festival’s Vanguard section also features two co-productions with Flanders, both through Koen Mortier and Eurydice Gysel’s Brussels-based production company Epidemic: Alex van Warmerdam’s Borgman (pictured) and The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears.
Borgman premiered at Cannes this year and stars Flemish actors Jeroen Perceval, Jan Bijvoet, Tom Dewispelaere and Gene Bervoets. The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears is written and directed by Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani, with a cast including Sam Louwyck (The Fifth Season, 22nd of May) and Hans De Munter.
Opening the festival is Bill Condon’s Wikileaks drama The Fifth Estate, which was partly shot in Flanders, and co-produced by Hilde De Laere for FBO. De Laere was also involved as co-producer in The Loft, the American remake of Erik Van Looy’s Loft.
Finally, Paul Haggis’ Third Person, which will also be presented in Toronto, was produced by Paul Breuls’ Belgian production outfit, Corsan.
