Songs From the Outside, the new musical short film by Flemish director Michael Van Ostade, has been selected for the Little Rock Film Festival in Texas, where it is to have its international premiere. The Little Rock Film Festival celebrates its eighth edition this year, running from 12-18 May.

Songs from the OutsideAfter picking up a VAF Wildcard, one of Flanders’s biggest cash prizes for short films, with his graduation effort Nigredo, Michael Van Ostade returns to the international festival scene with a new story. Set against a Victorian backdrop, Songs From the Outside tells the story of Horace, a young businessman on the brink of financial ruin. One night, a strange object comes crashing into his garden and starts singing. Horace responds, setting in motion a rollercoaster which shows the narrative power music has in film. The main roles are played by Andrew Van Ostade, Dolores Bouckaert (Little Black Spiders), Brenten Pieper and Wim Willaert (Homegrown, Offline).

Songs From the Outside premiered at the end of 2013 at the International Short Film Festival in Leuven and also screened at the European Youth Film Festival in Belgium. After Little Rock, the film will segue to the America Online Film Awards and the World Music & International Film Festival in Washington, DC.

Led by Brent and Craig Renaud, acclaimed documentary filmmakers for HBO and Discovery Channel among others, the Little Rock Film Festival is one of the most competitive film festivals in the US. It was rated twice by MovieMaker Magazine as being among the top 25 festivals ‘worth the fee’ and has over $10,000 in cash prizes to hand out each year. The festival screens around 100 films, selected from some 1,000 submissions from 30 countries worldwide. In the past, a number of acclaimed films and directors have visited the Festival, including indie hit Short Term 12, which won the Golden Rock for Narrative Film last year; the Oscar-nominated Beasts of the Southern Wild (Golden Rock 2012); and the critically acclaimed Winter’s Bone starring Jennifer Lawrence (Golden Rock 2010).
