synopsis

A Country More Beautiful Than Before (Un pays plus beau qu'avant) is a documentary film about a Congolese businessman in Brussels. The wanderings of Jean-Simon reveal a microcosm of informal commerce within the Congolese community. The everyday economic urgency of this 'humble salesman' is tied to the political and humanitarian urgency that animates the diaspora faced with the situation in Congo today and with Belgian colonial history. The film revolves around these two imperatives, in a negotiation between here and elsewhere, the past and the present.
Un pays plus beau qu'avant est un portrait documentaire d’un homme d’affaires congolais à Bruxelles. Les errances de Jean-Simon esquissent les contours d’un microcosme d’affaires informels dans la diaspora congolaise. L’urgence économique de ce « simple commerçant » se noue à l’urgence politique et humanitaire qui anime les Congolais vivant en Europe, face àla situation au Congo et a l’histoire coloniale. Le film tourne autour de ces deux impératifs, dans une négociation entre ici et ailleurs, aujourd’hui et autrefois.
Un pays plus beau qu’avant is een film over Congo gemaakt in Brussel. De omzwervingen van Jean-Simon leggen de microcosmos bloot van de schaduweconomie binnen de Congolese gemeenschap. De dagelijkse financiële urgentie van deze kleinhandelaar is doordrongen van de politieke situatie in Congo. De film bevindt zich tussen deze twee imperatieven, in een constante onderhandeling tussen hier en elders, verleden en heden.
