synopsis

Knokke, Belgium. The casino of this mundane coastal town became the epicentre of one of the most important events in the history of experimental and avant-garde cinema. The legendary festival 'EXPRMNTL' was the meeting place for now equally legendary filmmakers and the place where bourgeoisie and counterculture in the 60s came to blows - earning Belgium its place in the pantheon of cinema history and contributing to the development of contemporary image culture.
Knokke, Belgique. Le casino de cette ville côtière mondaine devenait l’épicentre d’un des événements les plus importants de l’histoire du cinéma expérimental et avant-garde. Le festival légendaire EXPRMNTL constituait le lieu de rendez-vous pour des réalisateurs devenus tout aussi légendaires et le champ de bataille où s’affrontaient bourgeoisie et contreculture des années 60. EXPRMNTL nous raconte comment cette chic station balnéaire est devenue le lieu de rencontre mythique pour les réalisateurs expérimentaux. Ce festival légendaire a valu à la Belgique sa place au panthéon de l’histoire du cinéma et a contribué au développement de notre culture de l’image contemporaine.
Knokke, België. Het casino in deze mondaine kuststad is de locatie voor hét evenement uit de geschiedenis van de experimentele en avant-garde film. Het legendarische festival EXPRMNTL: de ontmoetingsplaats voor - nu even legendarische - filmmakers maar ook het strijdtoneel tussen bourgeois en counterculture in de jaren 60. EXPRMNTL vertelt het verhaal van hoe deze badplaats voor de beau-monde de geschiedenis in ging als mythische plek voor de experimentele en underground film, hoe België gedurende korte tijd een hoge plek opeiste op het wereldtoneel van de cinema en hoe dit legendarische festival bijgevolg bijdroeg aan de ontwikkeling van onze huidige beeldcultuur.
