synopsis

Gaston's War is the story of a Fleming who (together with many others) was sacrificed by the English in World War II in order to mislead the Germans. The recklessness, daring and innocence of the young hero form a sharp contrast to the ruthlessness of the English co-ordination services. Gaston's adventures in the resistance border on the incredible : not only is he active as a 19-20 year old in a vast area of enemy-occupied territory (from Brussels, through occupied France, to Spain), he is also appointed by London to reorganise the Dutch resistance because it has been completely infiltrated by the Germans. Finally he becomes a victim of the infamous Englandspiel. Gaston is moved around the European theatre like a pawn in a brutal game of chess. He is only able to survive the war through his own ingenuity.
Gaston’s War est l’histoire d’un Flamand qui, avec de nombreux autres, a été sacrifié par les Anglais lors de la seconde guerre mondiale afin de tromper les Allemands. L’imprudence, l’audace et l’innocence du jeune héro contraste avec la cruauté du service de coordination anglais. Les aventures de Gaston dans la résistance frôlent l’incroyable : En plus d’être un jeune homme de 19-20 ans actif dans un vaste territoire à moitié occupé par l’ennemi ( à partir de Bruxelles, en passant par la France occupée, jusque l’Espagne), il est aussi nommé par Londres pour réorganiser la résistance néerlandaise, complètement infiltrée par les Allemands. A la fin, il devient une victime du bluff infâme organisé par l’Angleterre. Gaston est transporté à travers le théâtre européen comme un vulgaire pion dans un jeu d’échec brutal. Il parvient à survivre à la guerre grâce à sa propre ingéniosité.
