The story of a group of people who are rehearsing for a stage performance in a psychiatric institution in the Belgian city of Ghent. During the making of the play the audience learns about what is going on in the heads of these people, both patients and non-patients. However it is never clear who is truly mad and who is not… The documentary questions what is reality and what might be fiction. Is the world outside the institution walls really so different from that inside? Behind the Mental Scenes is a brutal, poetic document of a diseased time.
