Marina, I’m the same… and 82 Days in April to Valladolid

There's a strong Flemish presence at this year's Valladolid International Film Festival in Spain (19-26 October), where Stijn Coninx’ feature film Marina and Caroline Strubbe’s I’m the same I’m an other screen in the Official Competition and Bart Van den Bempt’s debut feature 82 Days in April is in the fest’s Meeting Point programme. Bülent Öztürk’s short film Houses With Small Windows and Pieter Coudyzer’sThe Wake complete the Flemish line-up.

Flemish animation company Grid Animation elected European Animation Producer of the Year

Ghent-based animation studio and producer Grid Animation has been elected European Animation Producer of the Year at Cartoon Forum, the Pan-European co-production and financing platform for animation programmes. French speaking Belgian broadcaster RTFB was also nominated in the category European Broadcaster of the Year, the award eventually went to Super RTL/ RTL Disney.

Cartoon Forum 2013Both Jan Goossen and Mark Mertens of Grid were present to receive the award. The duo was pleasantly surprised by the choice of the jury within the category European Animation Producer of Year in which they had to compete with some well renowned companies within the industry.

850 Meters going strong on the festival scene

Joeri Christiaen’s animated short film 850 Meters has recently captured the hearts of audiences at the Mundos Digitales International Animation Festival in Coruña, Spain (4 – 9 July) and was awarded the fest’s Audience Award, making it the film’s first international award. The film is set to tour various other festivals including Brazil and Rio de Janeiro.

850 MetersThe 11th edition of Mundos Digitales took place in Coruña this year while the festival’s main subject focused on 3D Animation, Visual Effects, Videogames and Architectural Visualization. Besides the official competition, the festival hosts a professional forum organising several conferences. Professionals from major international companies related to these fields of animation present the most interesting projects of the year at the forum.

Oh Willy... fares well at Los Angeles Film Festival

The animated short film Oh Willy... by Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef further piles up awards, now having received the Honolulu Film Office Award for Best Animated/Experimental Short Film at the 2013 Los Angeles Film Festival (13 – 23 June). As such, the Belgian-French-Dutch co-production cashed in a $1,500 prize, adding this to its already successful award history.

Oh Willy...The 17-minute long stop motion Oh Willy... was acclaimed by the jury as ‘a truly exceptional piece of work’. In the film, fifty-something Willy returns to the nudist community where he spent his youth to visit his dying mother.

Grand Prix goes to Junkyard

Hisko Hulsing’s animated short Junkyard won the Animation Jury’s Grand Prix – Magnolia Award at the Shanghai TV Festival (10 – 14 June 2013). The award ceremony was broadcasted live on Chinese television and viewed by 350 million people.

Director Hisko Hulsing (on the letft) at the Shanghai TV FestivalThe Shanghai TV Fest, one of the biggest Asian TV festivals and partner of the Shanghai Film Festival, programmed Junkyard in its Outstanding Shorts section. Junkyard had its international premiere last June at the Annecy International Animation Festival. Recently the film was also selected as the Dutch submission for the Academy Awards Best Animated Shorts category.

Norman wins Best Debut in Annecy

Robbe Vervaeke’s highly expressive animated Short Norman has won the Jean-Luc Xiberras Award for Best Debut at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival (10-15 June). Norman, produced by Cinnemon Entertainment, is Vervaeke’s first professional film after graduating from the royal academy of fine arts in Ghent in 2008.

Robbe Vervaeke's NormanNorman takes place in a city filled with old, statuesque buildings, with dark shadows and weathered trees. In this city lives Norman, a thickset, shapeless and pale-faced man. Screen Flanders distributes €5 million among 20 productions

Minister-President of Flanders Kris Peeters presented the list of 20 productions that are to receive support through Screen Flanders, the new economic fund in Flanders. A total amount of €4,995,000 ($6,678,685) is to be distributed in the fund's inaugural call. Another €5million will be divided among applicants in both remaining calls in June and end of October.

screenThe first call for Screen Flanders ended on 28 February 2013 after which a jury selected the projects. A total of €4,995,000 ($6,678,685) is distributed among 20 productions, amounts varying between €100.000 ($133,700) en €400.000 ($535,000) per project. Support went to 10 live-action features, six animated features, three animated series and one live-action series.

Oh Willy... does it again

Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels’ short film Oh Willy… has won yet another two international awards. The stop motion short was awarded Best Animated Short at the International Animation Film Festival ‘Golden Kuker’ in Sofia, Bulgaria (7-12 May). It also won the Best International Short Award at the Chilemonos Animation Festival in Chili (8-12 May), making it the 75th recognition on the film’s slate since its world premiere at the 2012 Clermont-Ferrand film fest.

ohwillyfinewsxOnly last week Oh Willy… took home Stuttgart’s Grand Prix, while the short film can now add number 75 to its list of international awards and special mentions. Highlights in Willy’s career were the Cartoon d’Or, which the short won in 2012, and its nomination for the French Césars in 2013.

Rain, The Fifth Season and Oh Willy… to LA Film Fest

Gerard-Jan Claes and Olivia Rochette’s documentary Rain will have its US premiere in the documentary competition of LA Film Fest (13 – 23 June 2013). Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth’s feature film The Fifth Season has been selected for the International Showcase in LA while the award-winning animated short film Oh Willy… by Emma de Swaef and Marc James Roels was confirmed for the short film program.

rainfinews01On 25 May 2011 the world renowned Ballet de l’Opéra National de Paris presented 'Rain', its first ever performance of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Directors Olivia Rochette and Gerard-Jan Claes followed the rehearsal process from the auditions to the opening performance.

Two more for Oh Willy…

Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s animated short Oh Willy… won the Grand Prize at both the International Animation Film Festival in Stuttgart (23-28 April) and the Czech Anifest in Tepliche (26 April-1May). The award in Stuttgart also comes with a €15,000 cash prize.
