Grand Prize for Cafard in Holland

Jan Bultheel’s animated feature Cafard has won the Grand Prize for Best Animation Feature at the 19th edition of the Holland Animation Film Festival in Utrecht (HAFF, 16-20 March).

Grid Animation named European Producer of the Year at Cartoon Movie

Flemish animation studio Grid Animation has been awarded the prize for European Producer of the Year at the Cartoon Movie Tributes, an award they share with the co-producers of the animated feature Ooops! Noah is Gone…. The Cartoon Movie Tributes reward outstanding achievements by companies and individuals in the field of animation.

Ooops! Noah Is GoneEach year, the Cartoon Movie Tributes are handed out in three categories: Director; Distributor; and Producer of the Year. Grid Animation took home the latter award, together with Ulysses Filmproduktion, Fabrique d’Images and Moetion Films, respectively the German, Luxembourg and Irish co-producers of Ooops! Jan Bultheel and Grid Animation nominated for Cartoon Movie Tributes

Director Jan Bultheel and animation studio Grid Animation have both been nominated for the Cartoon Movie Tributes, the annual animation prizes honouring the best of European animation. Bultheel has been nominated with his feature debut Cafard as Director of the Year, while Grid Animation and its co-producers on the feature Ooops! Noah is Gone… are competing for Producer of the Year. Opening Cartoon Movie this year is Robinson Crusoe, a 3D animation feature directed by Vincent Kesteloot and Ben Stassen.

CafardJan Bultheel is one of the nominees for the award of European Director of the Year with his animation feature Cafard. For his feature debut, the director used techniques such as motion-capture and facial tracking to transfer the movements and expressions of the actors onto animated figures.

Cafard competing in Holland

Jan Bultheel’s animated film Cafard has been selected for the International Feature Film Competition at the Holland Animation Film Festival, set to run 16-20 March in Utrecht. Four co-productions with Flanders have also been selected for the Festival’s Short Film programme.

CafardThe film is one of nine features competing in the Holland Animation Film Festival’s International Competition and marks the Dutch premiere for Cafard after festival screenings in Ostend, Busan, Montreal, Gijón and Arras. Arielle Sleutel produced for Tondo Films.

Talent from Flanders represented at the Berlinale

There was another strong presence from Flanders at this year’s International Film Festival in Berlin (11-21 February). Actress Martha Canga Antonio took the stage as one of 10 European Shooting Stars; foreign films starring Veerle Baetens and Jan Bijvoet were in the line-up; four film professionals from Flanders were picked for the Berlinale Talents initiative; and a variety of Flemish (co-)productions screened in the European Film Market.

BlackMartha Canga Antonio was one of 10 European Shooting Stars in the spotlight during the Berlinale. The actress made an international impact with her debut role as Mavela in Black, a contemporary Romeo & Juliet story directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Previous Shooting Stars have included Matthias Schoenaerts, Alicia Vikander, Carey Mulligan and Daniel Brühl.

Three from Flanders in competition in Gijón

BlackThe Ardennes and Cafard will be in official competition at the Gijón International Film Festival in Spain (20-28 November). The short film section additionally includes Copain by Jan and Raf Roosens, while Zurich and Phantom Boy, two co-productions with Flanders, have also been selected.

BlackBlack, the second feature by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah after their debut Image, competes in the festival’s official competition. It is a modern Brussels-based gang story about 15-year-old Mavela who falls in love with Marwan, a boy from a rival youth gang. The Caviar-produced film has won the Discovery Award in Toronto and the Audience Award at the Film Fest Ghent.

France’s Arras Film Festival ends on a musical note

Belgian Rhapsody, Vincent Bal’s romantic musical comedy about two rival Belgian brass bands, is to close this year’s Arras Film Festival in France (6-15 November). The line-up also includes Jan Bultheel’s animated feature Cafard. Both films are to have a French theatrical release later this year.

Belgian RhapsodyIn the summer, the Montreal World Film Festival created a precedent by offering Vincent Bal’s Belgian Rhapsody the festival’s closing slot. The Arras Film Festival will end on an equally cheerful note in choosing the musical comedy as this year’s closing film.

Cafard travels to Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinéma

Jan Bultheel’s debut feature Cafard is to have its North American premiere at the Festival du Nouveau Cinéma (7-18 October) in Montreal. An animated feature inspired by true events, the film will screen in the Festival’s Panorama programme. Rights have already been sold to France, where Eurozoom will release Cafard in theatres on 18 November.

CafardFollowing its world premiere at the Ostend Film Festival, Cafard is set for its international premiere at the Busan International Film Festival (1-10 October). The Festival du Nouveau Cinema will now be the film’s North American premiere, with Cafard screening in the Panorama section.

Flanders Image presents "Talent 10 Watch" 2015

Autumn  2015 is set to become the busiest season ever for Flemish cinema. 10 Flemish filmmakers will present their first or second feature in the days, weeks and months to come. To celebrate their success, Flanders Image brought the 10 directors together for a photo shoot at Vilvoorde-based camera and lighting rental company Lites.

Cafard, Reach for the Sky set to premiere at Busan

Cafard by Jan Bultheel and Reach for the Sky by Steven Dhoedt and Choi Wooyoung are to premiere at this year's Busan International Film Festival (1-10 October). This as part of the Wide Angle: Animation and the Wide Angle: Documentary Competition programs respectively.

CafardCafard, which received its world premiere at this year's Film Festival of Ostende, Belgium, is based on historical facts. The story of this animated feature with a graphic novel look and feel starts in 1914. While Jean Mordant wins the Wrestling Champion of the World title in Buenos Aires, his daughter Mimi is violently abused by German soldiers in Ostend. Determined to avenge this crime Jean, along with his coach and young nephew, enrols in the prestigious Armoured Car Division (AMC). War is ruthless, however, and he and his friends embark on a dramatic journey that will ultimately drag them around the world.
