Gilles Coulier’s Cargo in Competition at the London Film Festival
Gilles Coulier’s debut feature Cargo has been selected for the First Features Competition at the London Film Festival (4–15 October). Two further features and three shorts from Flanders have also been invited.
Cargo tells the raw story of how an Ostend fishing family is brought to the edge of destruction by a series of dramatic events. The lead roles are played by Sam Louwyck, Wim Willaert and Sebastien Dewaele. In London, Cargo is competing for the Sutherland Trophy, the main prize in the First Features Competition.
Cargo invited to San Sebastian International Film Festival
Gilles Coulier’s debut feature will compete in the New Directors programme, an international competition for first and second feature films, at the 65th San Sebastian International Film Festival.
Cargo is a story about how desperation can bring a family to the edge of destruction. The film marks the debut feature of VAF Wildcard winner Coulier, who previously directed shorts such as Iceland (2009), Paroles (2010) and Mont Blanc (2013).
CONNeXT confirms the first 15
The initial 15 titles are confirmed for the second outing of Flemish invitation-only networking event CONNeXT (formerly NeXT). The event, whose slogan is ‘Connect to what’s new and who’s next’, will run over an intense and hospitable three-and-a-half days of networking, pitching, screenings and keynote talks due to be held in Ghent from 8-11 October.
The latest completed Flemish films - plus (new in 2017) a selection of TV series - will be screened, while a selection of projects at various stages from development to post-production will be pitched to top professionals, including sales agents from Europe and North America and programmers from festivals such as Berlin, Karlovy Vary, Tribeca, Toronto and SXSW.
Gilles Coulier starts shooting debut feature Cargo
Shooting on Gilles Coulier’s debut feature, Cargo, has started on the Belgian coast. Following the success of The Natives, which was directed and part-written by Coulier, Cargo is the third project on the slate of his production company De Wereldvrede. Coulier’s short films Iceland and Mont Blanc screened in Cannes in 2010 and 2013 respectively.
Cargo is the story of three brothers who are desperately trying to save the family’s fishing business. But their passion for their loved ones and their determination to stay in business drive them to desperate measures.
First cast names announced for Gilles Coulier’s debut feature
Sam Louwyck, Wim Willaert and Sebastien Dewaele make up the main cast of Cargo, Gilles Coulier’s debut feature. The story revolves around three brothers desperately trying to save the family’s fishing business. But their passion for their loved ones and their determination to stay in business drive them to desperate measures.
The director teamed up with Tom Dupont to write the screenplay for Cargo, which they further developed during the Script&Pitch session organised by the Torino FilmLab. David Williamson returns as Coulier’s DOP after working with him on all three shorts as well as on The Natives.
