Roosens brothers’ short Copain wins three awards in Gijón

Copain, a short film by Jan and Raf Roosens, has won three awards at the International Filmfestival in Gijón, Spain. The film, which premiered in Cannes earlier this year, not only won the Prize for Best Short but also took home the awards for Best Direction and Best Script.

BuddyFollowing its world premiere in the Shorts Competition at Cannes this year, Copain (Buddy) has screened at a wide range of festivals including Cabourg, Palm Springs, Guanajuato and Odense. It has also been invited into the Official Competition at the European Film Festival in Les Arcs in France this month (19-21 December).

Three from Flanders in competition in Gijón

BlackThe Ardennes and Cafard will be in official competition at the Gijón International Film Festival in Spain (20-28 November). The short film section additionally includes Copain by Jan and Raf Roosens, while Zurich and Phantom Boy, two co-productions with Flanders, have also been selected.

BlackBlack, the second feature by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah after their debut Image, competes in the festival’s official competition. It is a modern Brussels-based gang story about 15-year-old Mavela who falls in love with Marwan, a boy from a rival youth gang. The Caviar-produced film has won the Discovery Award in Toronto and the Audience Award at the Film Fest Ghent.

The Ardennes and Copain to compete in Les Arcs

Robin Pront’s feature debut The Ardennes and Jan and Raf Roosens’s short film Copain will take part in the Official Competition at the European Film Festival in Les Arcs, France (12-19 December). The programme also includes Couple in a Hole by Tom Geens - a co-production with Flanders - and A Bigger Splash starring Matthias Schoenaerts.

The ArdennesThe Ardennes is one of 10 feature films selected for Official Competition in Les Arcs and is thus in line for the festival’s main prize, the Crystal Arrow.

Cannes line-up reveals talent from Flanders

Copain selected for the Short Film Competition and the animated short film Paradise competing in the Cinéfondation section ensure Flanders’s presence at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Various other films in the Festival’s line-up also feature talent from Flanders, while several (co-)productions with Flanders fly the flag in the Marché du Film.

ParadiseInvited for the Festival’s Short Film Competition, Jan and Raf Roosens’s short film Copain is about Fré, a teenager trapped between his conservative, wealthy parents and his working-class friends. Paradise, by Laura Vandewynckel, tells a story about people heading for a better place on different sides of the ocean; the stop-motion film is set to première as part of the Cinéfondation.

Flemish shorts duo head for Cannes

Buddy (Copain), the new short film by Jan and Raf Roosens, has been selected for the Official Competition of the Cannes Film Festival (13-24 May). Paradise, an animated short film by Laura Vandewynckel, has also been invited to join the Cinéfondation programme of the Festival.

BuddyThe Roosens brothers’ 15-minute short Buddy follows Fré, a teenager trapped between his conservative, wealthy family and his working-class friends. He manages to keep both worlds separate - until he falls in love.
