MoMA's 'The Great War' Programme Features Shorts from Flanders

This September, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York will screen three short films from Flanders: Tom Van Avermaet’sDeath of a ShadowTunnelrat, directed by Raf Reyntjens; and Peace, directed by Roman Klochkov. The films are part of ‘The Great War: A Cinematic Legacy’, a film exposition in commemoration of WWI curated by Charles Silver and Dave Kehr.

Tunnelrat‘The Great War: A Cinematic Legacy’ opened on 4 August, the 100th anniversary of the day World War I began, and runs till 21 September, highlighting some 60 feature films and thematic programmes aimed at providing a comprehensive view of the war as portrayed in film. The programme has just one short film section, with three out of the four entries coming from Flanders.

Veerle Baetens wins Best Actress at European Film Awards

Veerle Baetens has received the award for Best Actress at the European Film Awards for her role in Felix van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown. Director Tom Van Avermaet was also summoned to the stage as he collected the statue for Best European Short with Death of a Shadow. The European Film Awards are internationally considered the European equivalent of the Academy Awards. This year’s ceremony took place in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, Germany.

Death of a Shadow enters Meliès d’Or competition

Tom Van Avermaet’s short film Death of a Shadow has been awarded the Silver Meliès at the Leeds International Short Film Festival, making it an official candidate for the Meliès d’Or competition, taking place at the film festival of Sitges next October.

Death of a ShadowVan Avermaet attended the Leeds International Film Festival being invited as a jury member for the Short Film City competitions, including the Oscar-qualifying Louis le Prince and World Animation sections.

Raindance welcomes Flemish shorts trio

Jonas Baeckeland’s Prey, Tom Van Avermaet’s Oscar-nominated short Death of a Shadow and Hans Vercauter’s Montreal-winnerWolf’s Milk are to be presented at the Raindance Film Festival in Londen. Hisko Hulsing’s Junkyard, a coproduction with Flanders, was also added to the festival’s slate. Raindance presents the most promising new filmmakers from September 25 till October 6.

PreyAfter selections at the Brussels Film Festival and the LA Shorts Fest, Jonas Baeckeland’s short film Prey is to be screened at the Raindance Film Festival, one of Europe’s leading independent film festivals.

Number 25 for Death of a Shadow

By winning the Grand Prix at the Sapporo Shorts Fests in Japan earlier this week, Tom Van Avermaet can put award number 25 on his mantelpiece for his short film Death of a Shadow. The film, which was nominated for the Oscar for Best Short beginning of this year, is also nearing its 100th festival selection.

Death of a ShadowLast September, Death of a Shadow scooped its first award at the LA Shorts Fest where it was handed the Best of the Fest Prize. The kudo immediately qualified the short as an Oscar-contender after which invitations kept on rolling in. Up until now, Death of a Shadowhas secured a total of 25 international awards and special mentions.

Triple awards at HollyShorts

Three short films from Flanders were honoured at the HollyShorts Film Festival in Hollywood last week. Jan and Raf Roosens’ short Skunk (Rotkop) was awarded Best Drama, while Crossroads by Wouter Bouvijn went home with the Best International Award. Tom Van Avermaet’s Oscar-nominated short Death of a Shadow received the Hollyshorts Special Jury Award. The HollyShorts Film Festival (15-22 August) annually showcases the best and brightest short films from around the globe.

SkunkDuring the festival’s awards ceremony at the Roosevelt Hotel Ballroom in Hollywood, Jan and Raf Roosens’ short film Skunk was laureled as Best Drama. An 18-minute film, it features Olli, a lonely teenage skunk who spends his days hanging around the park, making trouble whenever he can.

Flanders foursome selected for Festroia’s competition

Four Flemish features have been selected for competition at the 29th Festroia International Film Festival in Portugal (7-16 June). Brasserie RomantiqueThe Broken Circle BreakdownOffline and Time of My Life are all in the running to take home some prizes. This year, the festival has also organised a focus on Belgium and pays homage to Flemish actor Jan Decleir.

Madly in LoveBoth Joel Vanhoebrouck’s Brasserie Romantique and Felix van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown screen as part of the fest’s official competition. Peter Monsaert’s directorial debut Offline is selected for the competitive First Works section, while Nic Baltazar is competing in the Man and His Environment category with Time of My Life.

Quality label for Death of a Shadow

The Centre National du Cinéma (CNC), the French governmental institution supporting, promoting and preserving film productions, has awarded Tom Van Avemaet’s short film Death of a Shadow with a ‘Prix de Qualité’. Attached to the quality label comes a cash prize worth 5,000 euros, to be divided among the producers and the director of the film. Another cash prize of 2,000 euros goes to composer Raf Keunen who wrote the original score. Earlier this year Death of a Shadow was nominated for an Oscar for Best Short Live Action Film.

dvsfinewsxxBy presenting the quality label, the CNC wishes to award artistic and technical performances in short films. Each year, an assembled committee of eight members watches every qualified film and then advises the president of the CNC, who has the final decision.

Flanders shorts overflow Newport Beach

From April 25 till May 2 three animated as well as three narrative shorts from Flanders are screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California. Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s Oh Willy…, Little Ryan by Aad Verstraelen and Hisko Hulsing’sJunkyard, a co-production with Flanders, are in the running for Best Animated Short. The live action short films Dura Lex by Anke Blondé, Death of a Shadow by Tom Van Avermaet and Anthony Schatteman’s Kiss Me Softly were also added to the fest’s official line-up.

Aad Verstraelen's Little RyanScreening in the animation category is Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s much appraised stop motion short Oh Willy… Fifty-something Willy returns to the naturist community where he grew up to visit his dying mother. After her death he flees into the forest in confused sadness where he finds the motherly protection of a big gentle hairy beast.

CAA signs Oscar nominated Tom Van Avermaet

Creative Artists Agency (CAA) has signed Tom Van Avermaet, the director of Death of a Shadow which is nominated for the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film this year. Celebrity names represented by CAA include Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Madonna, Colin Firth and Matthias Schoenaerts who signed with the agency in February last year.

Tom Van AvermaetHeadquartered in Los Angeles, CAA represents over 4,500 creatives. The CAA agents team appointed to represent Van Avermaet consists of Maha Dakhil, Hylda Queally and Jon Cassir.
