Presented at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival (28 June-6 July) this year is Felix van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown, screening as part of Variety’s Ten Euro Directors to Watch section. Sahim Omar Kalifa’s short film Land of the Heroes is selected to take part in the Focus on Kurdish Film while Tango Libre and Tenderness, two co-productions with Flanders, were also added to the line-up. Ari Folman’s The Congress, partly animated by Walking The Dog, is part of the Karlovy Vary programme too.

Tango LibreIt was previously announced that Felix van Groeningen was elected as one of Variety’s Directors to Watch who’re being showcased at this year’s Karlovy Vary Film Festival. After Steve+Sky, With Friends Like These and The Misfortunates, van Groeningen’s fourth feature The Broken Circle Breakdown drew him the attention of Variety’s critics assembling the list of 10 promising European directors.

The short film Land of the Heroes by Kurdish-Iraqi director Sahim Omar Kalifa is one of the 15 films screening in the Focus on Kurdish Film, highlighting classic Kurdish cinema as well as the work of young filmmakers. Produced by a team productions with the support of a Wildcard offered by the Flanders Audiovisual Fund, Land of the Heroes already screened at over 100 festivals worldwide.

Two films co-produced with Flanders also made it to the festival’s official selection. Frédéric Fonteyne’s Tango Libre will be shown in the Horizons section, a range of recent productions from around the world, including award-winning films. Last summer, the story about love quadrangle between a prison guard, two inmates and the woman with whom they both share life and love was invited to the Venice Days. Minds Meet (I’m the same I’m an other, Blue Bird) entered the project as Flemish co-producer.

Marion Hänsel’s Tenderness is to be seen in Another view, a spectrum of films displaying unusual artistic approaches. Maryline Canto and Olivier Gourmet portray a couple, separated for the past 15 years, who find themselves together again to get their son, hospitalized in another country after a ski accident. What do they still feel for one another? Man’s Films Productions coproduced the film.

Finally, Ari Folman’s Quinzaine-selected The Congress is set for a Karlovy Vary screening. The film was partially animated by Flemish animation studio Walking The Dog, who previously worked on animation features such as A Monster in Paris, Pinocchio, The Day of the Crows and animated series Picnic with Cake and Kika & Bob.

The Broken Circle Breakdown, Tango Libre and Tenderness all received support through the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Film Fund of Flemish Cultural Affairs Minister Joke Schauvliege.
