Bas Devos’s debut feature film Violet has been invited to New Directors/New Films. The 44th edition of the prestigious event takes place in New York (March 18-25) and is jointly organised by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).

VioletThe last time a Flemish project was selected for New Directors/New Films was in 2007, when the festival showed Geoffrey Enthoven’s The Only One. The event has a great history of discovering and launching filmmakers, with directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater and Wong Kar-wai among the guests.

Bas Devos’s debut feature received its premiere in the Generation 14plus programme at the Berlinale in 2014, where it won the Grand Prix for best feature film. Subsequently, Violet was selected for festivals including Karlovy Vary, Torino and Les Arcs, and has picked up prizes to date in Montreal and Los Angeles.

The film is about a teenager coping with the unexpected and violent death of his best friend. Cinemaphotography is by Nicolas Karakatsanis (The Drop, Bullhead, The Loft), with the lead roles taken by César De Sutter, Raf Walschaerts, Mira Helmer and Koen De Sutter.

Tomas Leyers produced Violet for Minds Meet (Lucifer, I'm the same I’m an other) and received support from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Film Fund of Flemish Cultural Affairs Minister Sven Gatz.
