Before The Last Curtain FallsIn the documentary, German-Canadian director Thomas Wallner follows a group of Flemish transsexual actresses and drag queens, all in their sixties and seventies, as they prepare to shine on stage one last time. Their stories became the foundation of the theatre piece Gardenia, directed by Alain Platel and Frank Van Laecke, which took them on tour around the world.

At the Canadian documentary festival Hot Docs, Before The Last Curtain Falls previously won the Special Prize of the Jury in 2014, and was selected for numerous international festivals including DOK.fest in Munich, the International Film Festival of Vancouver, the Göteborg Film Festival in Sweden and Amsterdam’s IDFA, before winning the Grand Prize at the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) in Montreal in late March.

Flemish filmmaker Eva Küpper (What’s in a Name) wrote the screenplay together with director Thomas Wallner, who shot the film with a mainly Flemish crew. Bart Van Langendonck of Savage Film (Galloping Mind, Bullhead) co-produced the film for Flanders and received support from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Film Fund of Flemish Cultural Affairs Minister Sven Gatz.
