Michaël R Roskam's third feature Racer and the Jailbird, starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Adèle Exarchopoulos, is this year's official Foreign Language Academy Award entry for Belgium, it was decided today by the country's Oscar® committee. Racer and the Jailbird is to get its world première in Venice and Toronto. Back in 2012, Roskam's feature debut Bullhead also got nominated for the Foreign Language Oscar.

Racer and the JailbirdIn Racer and the Jailbird, it’s love at first sight at a racing circuit when gangster Gino (‘Gigi’) meets Benedicte (‘Bibi'), a wealthy and fearless racing driver. Fierce and loyal, Gigi and Bibi fight for their love against fate, but also against reason and their own weaknesses. But how far can endurance be stretched? How far can they go to try and save what may already be lost?

Starring Matthias Schoenaerts (BullheadOur Souls at Night) and Adèle Exarchopoulos (Blue is the Warmest Color), the 'amour noir' is scripted by Roskam, together with Thomas Bidegain and Noé Debré. Director of Photography is Nikolas Karakatsanis, while Raf Keunen signed for the score and Alain Dessauvage for the editing.

Wild Bunch is selling the film internationally, while Neon is to release Racer and the Jailbird later on this year in the US.

Racer and the Jailbird is produced by Bart Van Langendonck for Savage Film (BE) and Pierre-Ange Le Pogam of Stone Angels (FR), in co-production with Pathé (FR), Wild Bunch (FR), Eyeworks (BE), Frakas Productions (BE), Kaap Holland Film (NL) and Submarine (NL). The film received support from Belgium's Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), Centre du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel (CAA), Screen Flanders, screen.brussels and Wallimage, as well as from co-producing funds Eurimages, Creative Europe and Netherlands Film Fund.
