TV series Marsman, directed by Mathias Sercu and Eshref Reybrouck, has been selected for Official Competition at this year’s FIPA, the Festival International de Programmes Audiovisuels held in Biarritz, France, from 20-25 January. Also showing is top European crime series The Team, which is a co-production with Flanders. Lieven Corthouts’s cross-media documentary project Emergency Exit has been selected for Smart FIP@, while Before The Last Curtain Falls – a co-production with Flanders – is also part of the programme. Finally, the Screen Flanders-supported BBC series The Missing is to receive a special screening.

MarsmanEleven international series are competing in FIPA’s Fiction Competition this year, including Flemish series Marsman, which won a Prix Italia at the end of 2014. A tragicomedy, it follows 40-year-old Nico Marsman who struggles to find a way to get his life back on track. The competition for the Fiction prize will be fierce, with the line-up also including Fortitude and Wolf Hall from the UK, Australia’s The Code and new pan-European crime series The Team.

Co-produced for Flanders by Lunanime, The Team unites three experts from Belgium, Denmark and Germany who form a Joint Investigation Team to solve a triple murder. Killing star Lars Mikkelsen, The Broken Circle Breakdown’s Veerle Baetens and German actress Jasmin Gerat take the main roles. The series was partly shot in Belgium with a mainly Belgian crew.

In addition to The Team, FIPA is also presenting The Missing in its Special Screenings session. Having premiered on BBC One at the end of October 2014, this prestigious drama series follows Emily and Tony Hughes whose five-year-old son Oliver goes missing while on holiday in France. The dramatic event sets off a manhunt that will last for years to come. Brussels-based production outfit Czar TV (The White Queen) co-produced the series for Flanders.

Emergency Exit, a new project by Little Heaven director Lieven Corthouts, has been selected to take part in Smart FIP@, a pitching platform for cross-media productions in development. Emergency Exit combines a documentary feature – a coming-of-age story about three African youngsters in a refugee camp – with a web tool and an online web documentary.

Finally, Before the Last Curtain Falls – the gripping portrait of a group of ageing drag artists setting out on one final tour – is screening out of competition in Biarritz. German-Canadian director Thomas Wallner wrote the screenplay together with Flemish filmmaker Eva Küpper (What’s in a Name) and shot the documentary with a mainly Flemish crew. Flemish co-producer is Savage Film’s Bart Van Langendonck.

Emmy Oost of Cassette for Timescapes produces Emergency Exit with support from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Film Fund of Flemish Cultural Affairs & Media Minister Sven Gatz. Johan Tuyaerts and Jan Keersmaekers produced Marsman for Sultan Sushi (Red Sonja), based on an original screenplay by Mathias Sercu. Marsman and The Team both received support from the VAF/Media Fund. The Team was also backed by the Screen Flanders Economic Fund, under the aegis of Economic Affairs Minister Philippe Muyters and Minister Gatz. Screen Flanders also supported The Missing.
