The Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF) has confirmed financial support for 12 new TV series through its Media Fund. Among the approved projects are Menuet’s WWI series In Flanders Fields, the De Raconteurs-produced three-part doc 100 Years Vooruit and animated series What’s the Big Idea, produced by Skyline Entertainment.

A production grant of €1,150,000 was assigned to the ten-parter In Flanders Fields (In Vlaamse velden), a co-production between Flemish pubcaster VRT and Ghent-based production hub Menuet (best-known for series such as Code 37 and features including The Broken Circle Breakdown and The Misfortunates).

Scheduled to air at the end of 2013, In Flanders Fields is an epic family tale set against the backdrop of World War I, and commemorating the centenary of the beginning of the Great War.

Jan Matthys (The Emperor of TasteKataraktQuiz Me Quick) is to direct the 50-minute episodes of In Flanders Fields. Established scriptwriters Carl Joos (The Broken Circle Breakdown, Dossier K., The Alzheimer Case), Charles De Weerdt (Code 37, the series) and Geert Vermeulen (Katarakt) joined forces to write the screenplay.

Made up of three half-hour sequences, the documentary series 100 Years Vooruit receives €180,000 worth of production funding. Production outfit De Raconteurs teamed up with public broadcaster VRT to tell the history of the Vooruit building in Ghent. In 2013, it will not only be exactly 100 years since the building was constructed, but the famous landmark will also celebrate its 30th anniversary as an arts centre. Raconteurs co-founder Peter Vandekerckhove and Pascal Verbeken wrote the screenplay, turning it into a personal mix of experiences, surprising observations and ‘punch & poetry’.

Vandekerckhove will be taking the director’s seat and is no newcomer when it comes to making documentary portraits. He adapted his own book, Meneer Doktoor, depicting the life of mid-century GPs, for the screen and was involved in Drie generaties, a set of eight stories about three generations of one family who all follow the same profession.

Another production grant of €156,000 was given to What’s the Big Idea?, a string of 52 five-minute animated episodes to be produced by Skyline Entertainment, who are currently working on political crime series Salamander. Director Tanguy De Kermel will direct the animated series which is scripted by Rachel Murelle. The project will air on VTM’s children's channel, Kzoom.
