Belgian actor Eric Kabongo plays one of the main roles in the German comedy Willkommen bei den Hartmanns. The film has recently been topping the charts in Germany and has launched Kabongo’s international career.

What About Eric?In Willkommen bei den Hartmanns, Kabongo plays Diallo, a Nigerian refugee who is offered a home by a well-off Munich family. He soon makes friends with the family members, but they are tested when they have to face racism, bureaucracy and suspicions of terrorism because of him. The comedy passed the 500,000-admissions mark in its opening weekend and is currently at number one in the German charts.

Congo-born Kabongo came to Belgium at the age of 13 and has been pursuing a career in the entertainment business ever since. Under his stage name of Krazy-E, he has performed with a live band and has released six singles and an album. He also landed roles in various films and TV series including Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah’s Black, The Fifth Estate and Dutch comedy Mannenharten.

In 2014, Ruben Vermeersch and Lennart Stuyck focused on Kabongo’s search for success in their documentary What About Eric? The film explored his inner world, showing how his troubled past and the realities of life threatened to compromise his career. His role in Willkommen bei den Hartmanns may well prove a turning point.
