Belgian director Jan Matthys will direct the first three episodes of the second season of Our Girl, a BBC1 drama series about a female medic on an African mission. Last year, Matthys worked on the third season of crime series Shetland, shooting episodes four, five and six.

Jan Matthys (c)Mark Mainz-ITV StudiosThe second series of Our Girl has been commissioned by Charlotte Moore, BBC One Controller, and Polly Hill, Controller of BBC Drama Commissioning, who was previously involved in producing series such as The White Queen, The Honourable Woman, The Missing and London Spy.

Written by Tony Grounds, the second series of Our Girl shifts its focus to a new character. Michelle Keegan (Ordinary Lies, Coronation Street) plays 25-year-old Army medic Georgie Lane, a brilliant and committed soldier who embarks on a humanitarian mission to a refugee camp on the Kenya-Somalia border. When extremist militias raid the camp and abduct several aid workers, Lane’s mission turns into a nightmare.

Shooting starts in mid-March and will take place chiefly on location in South Africa. Matthys, who will direct the first three out of five episodes, is mainly known for directing several Belgian series including wartime dramas In Flanders Fields and The Emperor of Taste. Last year, he also directed the final three episodes of Shetland’s third season for the BBC.

Our Girl is the latest example of the growing demand for Belgian directors from Flanders to direct international series. In addition to Matthys, Jakob Verbruggen directed the first season of The Fall, several episodes of The Bridge (US) and London Spy, as well as being signed to direct the season finale of House of Cards. Cordon director Tim Mielants was involved in the second series of The Tunnel and finished shooting the third season of Peaky Blinders at the end of January. Meanwhile, Michaël R. Roskam (Bullhead) shot several episodes of Berlin Station and is currently also developing the pilot of his HBO series Buda Bridge.
