Two Flemish films have been selected for the 15th EU Film Festival in Chicago: Hilde Van Mieghem’s Madly in Love and Frank Van Passel’s Madonna’s Pig. The EU Film Festival is held annually and aims to give Chicago's cinema-going public a taste of European cinema.

madonna's pigMadly in Love has competed in competitions at numerous international festivals, winning prestigious awards along the way, including the LA Femme International Film Festival’s Best Foreign Film Award and the Best Film Award at California's Broad Humor Film Festival. In Europe the film toured Hamburg, Funchal (Portugal) and Bergen (Norway) among others. The producers also confirmed remake plans for the film in both The Netherlands and the US.

Madly in Love tells the story of teen Eva, her mother Judith, aunt Barbara and big sister Michelle, who work their way through the chaos called love. The result is a roller coaster ride of first crushes, lust, affairs, baby fever, and indestructible love. The four women are beautiful, courageous and sensible, but are also sometimes a bit lost.

Madly in Love is Van Mieghem’s third feature, following The Kiss and Love Belongs To Everyone. The film features an all-star Flemish cast, including popular actors Veerle Dobbelaere, Wine Dierickx, Kevin Janssens, Koen De Bouw, Koen De Graeve, Marie Vinck and Jan Decleir.

Madonna’s Pig is about traveling salesman Tony Roozen and his newest gadget, Porky – a robotic pig – who end up stranded in the tiny hamlet of Madonna, where deep and lasting political conflicts have disrupted village life. Tony can’t wait to leave this godforsaken place but young village teacher Maria Glorie needs his help. The film is directed by Frank Van Passel, known for earlier work such as Tales of a Liar, The Emperor of Taste and Villa des Roses. For the screenplay, Van Passel collaborated with Marc Didden, who he had previously worked with on hugely popular TV series The Emperor of Taste.

Both Madly in Love and Madonna’s Pig were produced by Bert Hamelinck (Love Belongs to Everyone, Desert Ski, Bo) from Brussels-based outfit Caviar. The 15th Annual European Union Film Festival, the largest showcase in North America for the cinema of the European Union nations is held from 2-29 March. The fest is organised by the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago. As always, the festival presents a wide range of recent productions, from first features by the cream of Europe’s new talents to the latest films by established masters.
