Shooting on Speechless, the adaptation of Tom Lanoye’s well-reviewed novel of the same name, will start this summer. Actress and director Hilde Van Mieghem is to direct; Viviane De Muynck and Stany Crets will play the main roles.

SpeechlessSpeechless (working title) is about successful writer Jan Meersman whose life is turned upside down when his mother has a stroke. Having lost the ability to speak, the once vibrant and flamboyant woman turns into a shade of her former self. Meanwhile Jan is struggling with the deadline for his new novel. He starts questioning everything, including his literary priorities, because of the situation with his mother.

Viviane De Muynck (The Verdict, Time of My Life) will play the mother, José, while Stany Crets (Amateurs, Old Belgium) takes the role of Jan Meersman. Rik Van Uffelen (De vijfhoek, Sweet Jam) will play Jan’s father, Roger. Marie Vinck (Madly in Love, Oxygen), Flor Decleir (Cordon) and Hans Kesting will also star in the film.

Hilde Van Mieghem will be directing her fourth feature after The Kiss, Love Belongs to Everyone and Madly in Love. Van Mieghem also writes scripts and regularly acts in Flemish, Dutch, French and German films and TV series including The Bunker, The Team and In Flanders Fields.

Speechless is a Caviar production (Black, Paradise Trips). The film received support from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Film Fund of Flemish Cultural Affairs Minister Sven Gatz.
