The Natives, the absurdist fiction series directed by Gilles Coulier, has been nominated for a Rockie Award in the category Comedy Series. Also nominated in the Reality section is Flemish comedy show The Idiots. The prizes are awarded at the Banff World Media Festival in Canada each year as part of one of the most prestigious competitions for television and digital content. The winners will be announced on June 14.

The NativesThe Natives competes in the category Comedy Series against five other international titles, including The Big Bang Theory and HBO’s Sillicon Valley. In the eight-part series, Gilles Coulier depicts the deranged inhabitants of a picturesque small village who are driven by misplaced ambition and vanity. When stand-up comedian Freddy De Vadder comes to town, everything changes.

The Natives was previously selected for the professional section of Paris’s leading television festival, Séries Mania; Film Fest Gent; and the International Film Festival of Rotterdam. The series is the first project of newly founded production house De Wereldvrede, with Gilles De Schryver as producer.

In addition to The Natives, Woestijnvis’s comic TV show The Idiots has a chance to win a Rockie Award. It is selected in the Reality category, where it competes against programmes like Deadliest Catch, The Apprentice and Highway Thru Hell. In The Idiots, two idiots try to find an answer to questions Belgian comedian Philippe Geubels asks himself but is too afraid to answer.

Flemish productions have become a regular feature at Banff in recent years, with titles such as Plankton Invasion, Road to Compostela and Safety First being nominated. What If? and Quiz Me Quick have also won prizes at the Festival.

The Natives received support from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund/Media Fund of Flemish Media Minister Sven Gatz and was also backed by the Screen Flanders economic fund under the aegis of Flemish Economic Affairs Minister Philippe Muyters and Cultural Affairs Minister Gatz.
