KVIFF invites Felix van Groeningen as Future Frames Master

Director Felix van Groeningen will be this year’s Master for Future Frames, the initiative hosted by the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and European Film Promotion to promote upcoming film talents. The 10 Future Frames participants – among them Flemish filmmaker Karen Vázquez Guadarrama – will be able to attend a masterclass given by van Groeningen. His latest film Belgica is part of the Official Selection at the Festival.

Felix van Groeninge (c) Hans De GreveThe director of The Broken Circle Breakdown and The Misfortunates will not only give a masterclass but will also share his wide-ranging experience in filmmaking with the young filmmakers selected for Future Frames’ second edition. During an intensive two-day programme, the 10 emerging professionals will be introduced to the media and film industry, while their short films will be presented to the festival audience.

Flower of a Thousand Colours selected for Future Frames in Karlovy Vary

The short documentary film Flower of a Thousand Colours by Karen Vázquez Guadarrama has been selected for the Future Frames programme (4-5 July) at the International Film Festival of Karlovy Vary. The annual initiative, in collaboration with European Film Promotion (EFP), shines the spotlight on 10 upcoming film talents. Flower of a Thousand Colours is the second Flemish short in a row to be selected for Future Frames.

Documentary short Flower of a Thousand Colours to Sundance

Flower of a Thousand Colours, a documentary short film by Karen Vázquez Guadarrama, has been invited to this year’s Sundance Film Festival (21-31 January). The film, which won Best Belgian Student Short at the Film Fest Ghent, will have its international premiere as part of Sundance’s short film programme.

Flower of a Thousand ColoursFlower of a Thousand Colours is an intimate portrait of the life of Emiliana, a single mother trying to survive in a remote Bolivian mining camp 4,897 metres above sea level. She lives with her children in the idyllic mountains of Mina Argentina. But appearances are deceptive: life in the camp is fierce and driven by alcohol.

Good start for Ghent Film Fest

Robin Pront's feature debut The Ardennes is the opening attraction at the 42nd Film Fest Ghent (13-24 October). The film, receiving its European première, is just one of the many indigenous titles Belgium's oldest and largest festival has in its programme this year. There are in total five Flemish features, one TV series, a dozen shorts, and two co-productions with Flanders.

The ArdennesOpening the Fest is The Ardennes starring Veerle Baetens (The Broken Circle Breakdown), Kevin Janssens and Jeroen Perceval, with the latter also co-writing the script with director Robin Pront. The film has already attracted attention at this year's Toronto International Film Festival where it had its world premiere and was picked up by distributors in such key territories as France (Diaphana) and Italy (Satine). Producer is Bart van Langendonck for Savage Film, the company behind Oscar-nominated Bullhead. International sales are handled by Montreal-based Attraction Distribution.
