Sum of Histories Scoops Silver Méliès

Lukas Bossuyt’s debut feature Sum of Histories has won the Silver Méliès for Best European Fantastic Feature Film at the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival in Italy. Moonwalkers, a co-production with Flanders, took home the Audience Award.

Sum of HistoriesThe Jury praised Sum of Histories “for showing the compelling interlacement of the characters’ lives within the sci-fi trope of timeline alteration” and also praised the director for “providing an intriguing analysis of the latest discoveries in the field of quantum physics”.

Asian premiere for Sum of Histories and The Land of the Enlightened

Sum of Histories, directed by Lukas Bossuyt, and Pieter-Jan De Pue’s The Land of the Enlightened both received their Asian premiere at the Hong Kong International Film Festival, which ended on 4 April. The programme also included four co-productions with Flanders: Schneider vs Bax, The White Knights, Les Cowboys and the short film Splintertime. Finally, Flemish actor Jan Bijvoet was also featured in Embrace of the Serpent, in which he plays one of the main roles.

Talent from Flanders represented at the Berlinale

There was another strong presence from Flanders at this year’s International Film Festival in Berlin (11-21 February). Actress Martha Canga Antonio took the stage as one of 10 European Shooting Stars; foreign films starring Veerle Baetens and Jan Bijvoet were in the line-up; four film professionals from Flanders were picked for the Berlinale Talents initiative; and a variety of Flemish (co-)productions screened in the European Film Market.

BlackMartha Canga Antonio was one of 10 European Shooting Stars in the spotlight during the Berlinale. The actress made an international impact with her debut role as Mavela in Black, a contemporary Romeo & Juliet story directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Previous Shooting Stars have included Matthias Schoenaerts, Alicia Vikander, Carey Mulligan and Daniel Brühl.

Flanders Image presents "Talent 10 Watch" 2015

Autumn  2015 is set to become the busiest season ever for Flemish cinema. 10 Flemish filmmakers will present their first or second feature in the days, weeks and months to come. To celebrate their success, Flanders Image brought the 10 directors together for a photo shoot at Vilvoorde-based camera and lighting rental company Lites.

Three World Premieres and Five Other Films Selected for Montreal

Sum of Histories, Lukas Bossuyt’s feature debut, is to have its world premiere in the First Films Competition at the Montreal World Film Festival, which takes place from August 27 till September 7. Empire and Nkosi Coiffure, two shorts from Flanders, also premiere in the World Competition section, while the programme contains five further films from Flanders: Belgian Rhapsody, Marry Me and the shorts Olav, The Soul Is Wandering and Dissonant.

Lukas Bossuyt set to shoot debut feature

Principal photography on Lukas Bossuyt’s directorial debut The Sum of Histories (working title) is scheduled to start on August 4. Set against a university backdrop in the city of Leuven in Belgium, the story combines elements of drama, romance and science fiction.
