In a quiet farmhouse somewhere in the Dutch countryside, 90-year-old Antonia begins the last day of her life. Lying peacefully in bed, she casts her mind back to the day, shortly after the Second World War, when she returned to the village of her birth. We then follow Antonia’s tumultuous life in the village (during the next fifty years), as well as those of her children and grandchildren. As one season follows another, the independent, unselfconscious and eccentric behaviour of Antonia and her family interwines with the daily life of the village. The old farmhouse becomes a home to an assortment of characters as initial resentment turns into tolerance and then love. And so now, surrounded by her daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter, Antonia is content that her time has come, knowing that as one chronicle reaches its conclusion, nothing has come to an end...
