Triple awards at HollyShorts

Three short films from Flanders were honoured at the HollyShorts Film Festival in Hollywood last week. Jan and Raf Roosens’ short Skunk (Rotkop) was awarded Best Drama, while Crossroads by Wouter Bouvijn went home with the Best International Award. Tom Van Avermaet’s Oscar-nominated short Death of a Shadow received the Hollyshorts Special Jury Award. The HollyShorts Film Festival (15-22 August) annually showcases the best and brightest short films from around the globe.

SkunkDuring the festival’s awards ceremony at the Roosevelt Hotel Ballroom in Hollywood, Jan and Raf Roosens’ short film Skunk was laureled as Best Drama. An 18-minute film, it features Olli, a lonely teenage skunk who spends his days hanging around the park, making trouble whenever he can.

Crossroads collects Bronze Medal at Student Academy Awards

Wouter Bouvijn’s short film Crossroads has been awarded the Bronze Medal at the 2013 Student Academy Awards. The official ceremony took place last night in Los Angeles after a week of industry and networking events, which the young director attended. It’s the first time in the history of the Student Academy Awards that a student film submitted by a Flemish film school brings home a medal.

CrossroadsHalf May, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (A.M.P.A.S.) announced all finalists for the Student Academy Award, including Wouter Bouvijn’s Crossroads as one of the three contenders for the Foreign Film Award. Eventually, Bouvijn took home the Bronze Medal worth $2,000.

Wouter Bouvijn’s Crossroads becomes Student Academy Awards finalist

Wouter Bouvijn’s short film Crossroads has been selected as one of the winners in the Student Academy Awards competition. Crossroads made it as one of the three finalists selected out of nine nominees in the Foreign Film category. Because of the selection, Bouvijn will be invited to Los Angeles to attend a week of industry and networking events prior to the awards ceremony on June 8. There it will become clear if the short from Flanders has won the bronze, silver or gold medal as Best Foreign Film. It’s the first time in the history of the ‘Student Oscars’ that an entry from a Flemish film school reaches the finals.

Flemish Award winners at Leuven short Fest

Benoit De Clerck’s The Importance of Sweet and Salt, Tom Van Avermaet’s Oscar nominated Death of a Shadow, Wouter Bouvijn’sCrossroads and Roman Klochkov’s Natasha were the winners in the Flemish competition at the 18th Leuven International Short Film festival (1 – 8 December). The Humo Award, a guest competition, went to Kiss Me Softly by Anthony Schatteman (pictured on the left).

The Award, which comes with a cash prize of € 2,000, also ensures the short a spot on the 2014 Academy Awards longlist. Meanwhile Wouter Bouvijn’s short Crossroads received the Award for Best Debut.

Grand Jury Prize for Crossroads in Angers

Crossroads, a short film by director Wouter Bouvijn has scooped the Grand Jury Prize for European Student Films at the Premiers Plans Festival in Angers, France (18-27 January). The short film had already been presented with the Award for Best Debut at the Leuven International Short Film Festival.
