EN - Growing up in a disadvantaged environment, Mamebou never had a chance of living a normal life, struggling with drug addiction, lack of self-esteem and poverty. His perception of reality becomes increasingly distorted as he desperately tries to find a way out of his cul-de-sac. 

FR – Mamebou, 17 ans, habite dans la dernière maison d’une voie sans issue à Bruxelles.

Ayant grandi dans un environnement désavantagé, Mamebou, un enfant prometteur, n’a jamais eu la chance de vivre une vie normale. A l’âge de 12 ans, il rencontra son premier problème avec la justice. Depuis, Mamebou se livre à un combat continu contre son addiction à la drogue, son manque d’estime de soi en plus de sa profonde pauvreté, qui l’empêche de remettre sa vie sur le droit chemin. Sa famille et son environnement social ne semblent pas promettre une solution au problème. Mamebou perd peu à peu le contrôle de la réalité tandis qu’il tente désespérément de sortir de cette impasse.

Desert Island dresse le portrait sombre et intime d’un jeune homme qui essaie d’échapper à son destin.

Desert Island and Grande Hotel grab FIPA kudos

Steve Thielemans’s Desert Island took the FIPA d’Or for Creative Documentary at this year's 25th International Festival of Audiovisual Programs (FIPA, 23-29 January). Lotte Stoops’ Grande Hotel received the Michel Mitrani Prize. No less than eight Flemish productions screened at FIPA this year.

Steve Thielemans's Desert IslandThe Michel Mitrani Award, named after the late founder of the festival and worth €8,000, is traditionally awarded by France Télévision on the night prior to the closing ceremony. The jury of five selected Grande Hotel from a total of seven nominated films from different sections of the festival.
