EN - A man is being robbed and stabbed by a junkie and, in the last second before he dies, a friendship from the past flashes before his eyes. He and his childhood mate drifted apart when the latter was drawn into an underworld of drugs and crime by a lowlife dealer who lived with his father on the local junkyard.

FR - Un homme est racketté et poignardé par un junkie et au cours des quelques secondes qui précèdent sa mort, une amitié de jeunesse défile devant ses yeux. Son ami proche et lui grandirent séparément, dès le moment où son ami s’enfonça de plus en plus dans le sombre monde de la drogue et de la criminalité sous l’influence d’un voyou trafiquant qui vivait avec son père dans une décharge avoisinante.

Flemish shorts bonanza at Palm Springs ShortFest

Several short films from Flanders are selected for this year’s Palm Springs International Short Film Festival (18-24 June). The selectees will be screened in various different sections of the festival. Perfect Drug by Toon Aerts was chosen for the WTF? segment, while Lukas Dhont’s Headlong was picked for the Si C’est Bon programme. Hisko Hulsing’s Junkyard, a co-production with Flanders, made the call as part of the Crimes And Misdemeanours section. Finally, Double Room, Chopper and Marcel, King of Tervuren also add a touch of Flanders to the Palm Springs line-up.

Perfect DrugThe Palm Springs International ShortFest is one of the largest showcases of short films in North America, this year marking its 19th edition. The seven-day competitive festival screens approximately 300 films from 40 countries in a series of 90-minute programmes and has about twenty competitive categories awarding prize money.

Grand Prix goes to Junkyard

Hisko Hulsing’s animated short Junkyard won the Animation Jury’s Grand Prix – Magnolia Award at the Shanghai TV Festival (10 – 14 June 2013). The award ceremony was broadcasted live on Chinese television and viewed by 350 million people.

Junkyard had its international premiere last June at the Annecy International Animation Festival. Recently the film was also selected as the Dutch submission for the Academy Awards Best Animated Shorts category.

Flanders shorts overflow Newport Beach

From April 25 till May 2 three animated as well as three narrative shorts from Flanders are screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California. Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s Oh Willy…, Little Ryan by Aad Verstraelen and Hisko Hulsing’sJunkyard, a co-production with Flanders, are in the running for Best Animated Short. The live action short films Dura Lex by Anke Blondé, Death of a Shadow by Tom Van Avermaet and Anthony Schatteman’s Kiss Me Softly were also added to the fest’s official line-up.

Aad Verstraelen's Little RyanScreening in the animation category is Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s much appraised stop motion short Oh Willy… Fifty-something Willy returns to the naturist community where he grew up to visit his dying mother. After her death he flees into the forest in confused sadness where he finds the motherly protection of a big gentle hairy beast.

Junkyard wins Best Independent Short Animation

Short animation Junkyard by Hisko Hulsing has won the Nelvana Grand Prize for Best Independent Short Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF, 19-23 September). The animation festival is the largest event of its kind in North America.

Recently the film was also selected as the Dutch submission for the Academy Awards Best Animated Shorts category. Meanwhile, the short has been confirmed for festivals such as the Fantoche International Animation Film Festival in Switzerland, BFI London Film Festival in the UK and Göteborg International Film Festival in Sweden.

Shorts Willy and Junkyard to compete at Annecy

Hisko Hulsing’s Junkyard and Oh Willy… by artisan animators Emma De Swaef and Marc Roels have been added to the Short Films section at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival (4-9 June). In addition, a commercial clip for public transport company De Lijn by digital effects artist Gerrit Bekers was selected for the Commercials competition of the French festival.

oh willyOh Willy… is directed by Emma De Swaef and Marc Roels who developed their distinctive style with Zachte Planten, De Swaef's graduation film from the Sint-Lukas academy in Brussels. The 17-minute film is produced by Ben Tesseur for Flemish stop- motion studio Beast Animation (A Town Called Panic), in collaboration with France and the Netherlands. Before making the Annecy bill, Oh Willy… premiered internationally at the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival in January.
