EN - Are we struggling to fit in, to go with the flow? Or are we fighting to stand out? Who wants to be in the rat race to end up in a place where there’s no room for personality? Fact is: we will never get any younger although we all believe in the illusion. In the end it’s all a painful cycle of disappointment.

Joe Vanhoutteghem's Rivers Return, Marc James Roels and Emma De Swaef’s Oh Willy… and Nicolas Daenens’ 27 have all been selected for the 10th Tirana International Film Festival (23 November-2 December) in Albania. All three films are screening in the Short Film Competition of the fest.

Still from Joe Vanhoutteghem's Rivers ReturnRivers Return (pictured left) started life as a series of station idents, 15-second videos that played between programmes on the Franco-German channel Arte during 2011. Now their creator, Joe Vahoutteghem, has brought that story to the fore in a 12-minute short film that premiered internationally at the Locarno Film Festival last August. The visually rich film was shot on location in Slovenia by Vanhoutteghem and rising Flemish cinematographer Nicolas Karakatsanis (BullheadThe Loft).

Shortissimo: Rivers Return

Rivers Return started life as a series of station idents, 15-second videos that played between programmes on the Franco-German channel Arte during 2011. The 27 short scenes were conceived with a narrative in mind and now their creator, Joe Vahoutteghem, has brought that story to the fore in a 12-minute short film that screened at the Locarno Film Festival in August.

Text Ian Mundell

Vanhoutteghem Rivers return'I came up with all kinds of images where people went through transitions,' he explains. 'Then I found I wanted to tie all these fragments together into a work of fiction, a kind of looped world that lets the viewer discover that everything is connected.'
