In the short film Still holding still, a 19th-century photographic practice is revived: a short-lived method of making child portraits, known as 'Invisible Mothers'. Sarah Vanagt tries to enter 'inside' the photos, into the long exposure time required by the first cameras.

synopsis

In the beginning all was glass. The lakes were filled with collodion and sodium sulphate. All was darkness. Then came the sun. When the steaming mixture rippled across the glass, spots appeared - sprays of nebulae, sometimes curls. And all this in a grey which exists no more. Thus the child people came into being. They crawled forth. Out of the glass, as if from a tree.
