synopsis

In A Gold Friend we follow nine-year-old Victor, an outsider who is having trouble finding his place in the world. He has no friends, until without his father's consent, he buys a goldfish. There are only two places where little Victor feels safe. For as long as he can remember, he has adored Lisette's curious goldfish store in his village. The other place where he likes to hang around is the canal, which reminds him of walks with his mom. Victor's dad, however, wants him to go straight home after school. Will his father discover Victor's new friend? How is Victor going to react?
Un ami en or raconte l’histoire d’un garçon de neuf ans, Victor, qui trouve difficilement sa place dans le monde. Il est un profane solitaire et il n’a pas d’amis, jusqu’au moment où il achète un poisson rouge contre la volonté de son père. Il n’y a que deux endroits où le petit Victor se sent en sécurité. Il raffole du magasin curieux de poissons rouges de Lisette dans le village. Après l’école, il passe aussi du temps près du petit canal qui lui rappelle ses promenades avec sa mère. Pourtant, Victor ne peut pas y rester trop longtemps, car son père veut qu’il rentre tout de suite. Son père découvrira-t-il le nouvel ami de Victor et comment Victor réagira-t-il ? Cette histoire se déroule pendant les premières années après la guerre. Les thèmes principaux sont l’attachement, le détachement, l’amitié et la solitude.
Vriend van Goud vertelt het verhaal van de negenjarige Victor, een eenzame buitenstaander die het moeilijk heeft zijn plaatsje in de wereld te vinden. Vrienden heeft hij niet, tot het moment waarop hij tegen vaderlijk gezag in een goudvis koopt. Er zijn slechts twee plekjes waar de kleine Victor zich veilig voelt. Al zolang hij zich kan herinneren, is hij namelijk verzot op het curieuze goudvissenwinkeltje van Lisette in het dorp. Na schooltijd blijft hij ook vaak rondhangen aan het kanaaltje dat hem doet denken aan vroeger, toen hij er nog met zijn mama wandelde. Lang kan Victor er echter nooit blijven, want van zijn vader moet hij onmiddellijk huiswaarts. Ontdekt zijn vader zijn nieuwe vriend en hoe zal kleine Victor reageren? Dit verhaal speelt zich af in de eerste naoorlogse jaren, draait rond hechting en loslaten en rond vriendschap en eenzaamheid.
