Working with a 16mm camera, the film follows the daily gestures and words of three generations of 'mother-daughter' (the mother, the grandmother and niece of the filmmaker).

synopsis

A Tongue Called Mother depicts the relationship between language, gestures and affiliation while exploring and investigating the question of bilinguism and identity. It also criticizes and questions the semiological conditioning of language and its imposition of the norm. The film searches for meanings through the juxtaposition of gestures, and the voiceover of words.
A Tongue Called Mother toont de relatie tussen taal, gebaren en verwantschap. Het onderzoekt de kwestie van tweetaligheid en identiteit. Het bekritiseert en bevraagt ook de semiologische conditionering van taal en het opleggen van de norm. De film zoekt naar betekenissen door het boven elkaar plaatsen van gebaren en woorden en de verbinding die het met zich meebrengt. Met de 16mm-camera als onderzoeksinstrument volgt de film de dagelijkse gebaren en woorden van drie moeder-dochter-generaties (de moeder, de grootmoeder en het nichtje van de filmmaker).
