synopsis

In Turkey, the saying “Horses, wives, weapons” is the ultimate checklist for manhood: you’ve got to have a car, a wife, and have done time in the army to prove you’re the real deal. Görkem, an 18-year-old Kurdish boy, has big dreams but a tiny wallet. Will military service be his ticket to work and marriage, as he and his mother like to think? And does the state really want people like Sefa, a dancer, and Onursal, a European Turk, to defend their country? Through their journey, we find out how militarism, state power, economic profits and the enforcement of gender stereotypes are all connected.
