synopsis

Angel follows the encounter between prostitute Fae and world-famous athlete Thierry. During a holiday in Senegal, he falls head over heels for the African beauty and they find dignity, hope and love. But one evening Thierry starts behaving strangely under the influence of substances. Fae is forced to leave him but when dies the next morning, she is arrested despite her innocence. To move on with her life, she must return to the place where it all started.

Director Koen Mortier wanted to portray the similar lives they lead: both having to give the best of themselves and their bodies to fans or clients. Angel is based on the acclaimed novel 'Monologue of Someone Accustomed to Talking to Himself by renowned Belgian author Dimitri Verhulst (The Misfortunates).
Un ange montre la rencontre de la prostituée Fae avec Thierry, le sportif mondialement célèbre. Pendant son voyage au Sénégal, il tombe instantanément amoureux de cette beauté africaine. Dans leur union, Thierry et Fae trouvent la dignité et l'espoir de se libérer de leur situation pénible. Au-delà de cette compréhension mutuelle, c'est leur amour qui prime. Jusqu'au moment où Thierry, sous l'influence de la drogue, commence à se comporter bizarrement. Le lendemain, quand Fae aprrend que Thierry est décédé, elle est arrêtée, malgré son innocence. Afin de pouvoir reprendre sa vie, Fae devra retourner à la chambre où tout a commencé.

Avec ce film poétique, le réalisateur Koen Mortier démontre le monde, les rêves et les peurs de Fae et l'histoire qu'elle a vécue avec le coureur mondialement connu. Ils mènent une vie similaire: ils se donnent corps et âme afin de plaire à leurs fans ou clients. Le film est basé sur le roman Monoloog van iemand die het gewoon werd tegen zichzelf te praten de Dimitri Verhulst (2011). Autres livres de Verhulst qui ont été adaptés pour le grand écran sont La merditude des choses et Problemski Hotel.
Engel volgt de ontmoeting van de prostituee Fae en de wereldberoemde sportman Thierry. Tijdens zijn vakantie in Senegal wordt Thierry halsoverkop verliefd op de Afrikaanse schoonheid. Ze vinden waardigheid bij elkaar, en de hoop zich uit hun benarde situaties te bevrijden. Boven dit wederzijds gevoel primeert echter hun liefde voor elkaar. Tot Thierry zich onder invloed vreemd begint te gedragen. Wanneer Fae de volgende ochtend ontdekt dat Thierry overleden is, wordt ze gearresteerd, ondanks haar onschuld. Om verder te kunnen met haar leven, moet ze terug naar de kamer waar het allemaal begon.

Regisseur Koen Mortier toont met deze poëtische film de wereld, dromen en angsten van Fae en wat ze meemaakte met de wereldberoemde wielrenner. Ze leiden een vergelijkbaar leven: beiden geven het beste van zichzelf en hun lichaam om fans of klanten te verrukken. De film is gebaseerd op de roman Monoloog van iemand die het gewoon werd tegen zichzelf te praten uit 2011 van de Belgische schrijver Dimitri Verhulst. Eerdere werken van Verhulst die ook verfilmd werden, zijn De helaasheid der dingen, Problemski Hotel en binnenkort ook De laatkomer.
