• Aphasia focuses on the absurdity that arises from the collective silence surrounding crime and the compartmentalisation of historical events. In medical vocabulary 'aphasia' refers to the sufferer's difficulty in finding words or losing the ability to speak. Tracing the line between Belgian colonialism, Austrian anti-Semitism and the war in Yugoslavia, Jelena Juresa focuses on collective, historical blind spots and the difficulty of speaking about a shared, troubled past. Or how strategically ignoring the crimes stemming from continuous and structural processes of dehumanisation remains a fundamental characteristic of our western societies.
• Aphasia mettent en relief l’absurdité générée par le silence collectif autour du crime et son fractionnement en événements historiques. Dans le vocabulaire médical, ‘aphasia’ (l’aphasie) se réfère à l’incapacité de trouver des mots ou à la perte de la parole. A travers le colonialisme belge, l’antisémitisme autrichien et la guerre en Yougoslavie, Juresa se concentre sur les zones grises et la difficulté d’évoquer un passé traumatique. Aphasia convoque l’histoire des médias audiovisuels et leur utilisation dans la fabrication de l’identité collective et nationale durant et après les crimes qui menèrent au génocide colonial, à l’Holocauste et aux meurtres de masse durant la guerre civile en Yougoslavie. In het medische jargon verwijst ‘aphasia’ (afasie) naar de onmacht om woorden te vinden of om te spreken. Op zoek naar parallellen tussen het Belgische kolonialisme, Oostenrijks antisemitisme en de oorlog in Joegoslavië, focust Juresa op de blinde vlekken en de onmogelijkheid om over het donkere verleden te praten. Aphasia verweeft de geschiedenis van audiovisuele media met hun rol in de vorming van een collectieve en nationale identiteit, tijdens en na de misdaden van de koloniale genocide, de Holocaust en de massamoorden van de Joegoslavische burgeroorlog. Of hoe een strategische ontkenning van misdaden, geworteld in voortdurende en structurele processen van ontmenselijking, een fundamenteel kenmerk blijft van onze westerse maatschappijen.a
