Beyond the Waves draws the portrait of Taro Yamamoto, an atypical young Japanese senator who used to be a popular actor. Through his story we also discover the image of contemporary Japan, a country marching towards nationalism, xenophobia and rearmament.

Beyond the Waves draws the portrait of Taro Yamamoto, an atypical young Japanese senator who used to be a popular actor. Through his story we also discover the image of contemporary Japan, a country marching towards nationalism, xenophobia and rearmament. A subjective Japan seen through the eyes of a rebel who goes against the flow. We accompany Taro through his struggles and doubts. What we discover is a reflection of our own reality. Japan is finally not so far away from us. And Taro Yamamoto feels closer than we could have imagined.
Beyond the Waves (Au-delà des vagues) dresse le portrait de Taro Yamamoto, un jeune sénateur japonais atypique. A travers ce portrait, c’est aussi celui du Japon qui se dessine, un pays qui marche vers le nationalisme, la xénophobie et le réarmement. C’est un Japon subjectif, vu par un rebelle qui marche à contre-courant. On l’accompagne dans ses luttes et ses doutes. Régulièrement la caméra prend de la distance et pause un regard ralenti sur une réalité sur le point de se dissoudre. Ce qui se raconte là, nous renvoie à notre propre réalité. Le Japon n’est finalement pas si loin et Taro, plus proche qu’on n’aurait pu l’attendre.
Beyond the Waves tekent het portret van Taro Yamamoto, een atypische jonge Japanse senator die vroeger een populaire acteur was. Doorheen zijn verhaal krijgen we ook een beeld van het hedendaagse Japan, een land op weg naar nationalisme, xenofobie en herbewapening. Een subjectief Japan gezien door de ogen van een rebel die tegen de stroom ingaat. We zien Taro doorheen zijn worstelingen en twijfels. Wat we ontdekken is een weerspiegeling van onze eigen realiteit. Japan is uiteindelijk niet zo ver van onze eigen wereld verwijderd. En Taro Yamamoto voelt dichterbij dan we ons hadden kunnen voorstellen.
