After World War I, Renier Joskin de Lamarache returns to his estate in Horlebecq where he lives with his mother, his ex-sister-in-law Emily, his grandfather and his handicapped son. But the only thing that can cheer him up is his correspondence with Rolande who nursed him in hospital during the war. When Rolande's marriage is officially annulled, Renier breaks of his engagement to Emily. Breaking of his engagement, together with the large amount of money he has invested in Rolande's 'Beauty Academy', makes the situation at Horlebecq intolerable.Based on the work of Herman Teirlinck
Après la Première Guerre mondiale, Renier Joskin de Lamarache retourne dans sa propriété à Horlebecq où il vit avec sa mère, son ancienne belle-sœur Emilie, son grand-père et son fils handicapé. Mais la seule chose qui peut lui remonter le moral est sa correspondance avec Rolande, une infirmière qui le soigna à l’hôpital pendant la guerre. Lorsque le mariage de Rolande est officiellement annulé, Renier renonce à ses engagements avec Emilie. Sa rupture avec celle-ci, couplée à l’importante somme d’argent qu’il a investi dans l’ Académie de Beauté de Rolande, rend la situation insupportable à Horlebecq.
